Positive Stuff

I am certain that the Saints are a better team than their record would indicate. Point of fact:

Quote:

For the fourth consecutive game, the Saints held an opponent to fewer than 100 yards rushing, matching a similar streak in 2000. In 1992, they held five straight foes to fewer than 100 yards rushing.

Joseph Addai, Carnell Williams, Lendale White, Shaun Alexander. Not bad.

Quote:

Bush had the three longest carries of his career in the first half -- 22 yards, 22 yards and 19 yards -- and two of them came up the middle. He said most of the credit goes to the offensive line, which had its best performance to date, allowing zero sacks and giving quarterback Drew Brees plenty of time to throw.

The Saints had their best rushing performance of the season in last Sunday's win at Seattle, particularly in the first half. And Reggie Bush quieted some of the concerns that he can't run up the middle like a traditional tailback.
Quote:

Lambasted last week for what is perceived to be a soft running style, Alexander was booed on multiple occasions while he once again was unable to find any hint of success (14 rushes, 35 yards). At one point, a fan tossed a bottle of beer onto the field to express his frustration.

Bullocks leapt between two blockers to get a hand on Josh Brown's attempt. Six plays and an extra point later, New Orleans had a 21-0 lead, and Seattle was in serious trouble.

Early in his career, Patten made his mark with his speed. He said he could run 40 yards in 4.27 seconds when he first came into the league out of Western Carolina. Last winter he ran a 4.3.
"I still feel like I have my speed. The older you get you may decline a little bit, but I feel like that's one thing I've been able to maintain," Patten said. "It's really not how fast you are in the 40. It's your play speed. You have a lot of fast guys, but you watch them on film, they don't get open, they don't get separation. It comes down to the technique aspect of running routes."
Patten said Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent was a prime example.
"You don't ever hear anyone talk about how fast he was, but all you ever saw was him about 5 or 10 yards behind defenders," Patten said.
Quote:

"He showed his speed and quickness," Holmgren said of Bush. "He showed he's a fine back. He got around us. He cut back. It's too hard to come back, as a rule, when you dig a hole like that for yourself."
Trailing by 11, Seattle twice moved into New Orleans territory in the fourth quarter. Those drives ended with an interception by Josh Bullocks and with a Hasselbeck incompletion on fourth-and-9.
I was lucky enough to see some very encouraging things in person from that nationally televised game Sunday night. Here are a few.

The receivers played well. The Saints receivers should do well against a garden variety secondary that has an over-hyped cb in Hall. I want to see Colston push him down and and get in his head like Steve Smith did two weeks ago. Patten and Moore are looking good too. And no one ever talks about what Eric Johnson does for this team.

The line on Sunday night played like the line from last year and I hope that they are in a rhythm now. Brees had all day to throw and Bush did a good job against what I consider a better than average defense.

The Saints defensive line man handled the Seahawks offensive line. I loved watching Hollis Thomas push a lineman around and sack Hasselback.

The secondary is looking better. Bullocks had a blocked kick and an interception and Harper... I love this kid.
Quote:

Roman Harper- The New Orleans defense sacked quarterback Matt Hasslebeck 5 times. Two of those sacks came on perfectly timed blitzes by the Saints second year safety Roman Harper. Harper who missed most of his rookie season with a knee injury, is emerging as a leader on this team. Harper finished the game with 6 tackles and 2 sacks, and helped lead New Orleans to their first win of the season.

Defensive player of the week Roman Harper.

McKenzie looked good and Young is making a case that he should start opposite MM. And I think that Jason David will be a good nickel back when he returns.

There is reason to believe that we'll see some good football from the Saints in the next few games. Enjoy the games and wave to the bandwaggoners that jumped off as you go by.

Bullocks is also starting to shape up as well. He's been criticized by many and has been playing pretty well lately.

Quote:

Bullocks led the team in tackles for the second consecutive week. But his biggest contribution came on special teams when he blocked a field goal and near the end of the game when he intercepted Matt Hasselbeck to secure the Saints' first win of the 2007 season.
