2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

First off let me say I'm not griping because the team bites on offense and/or they could/should score more points. I'm griping because I don't think McCarthy and Haslett are using two aspects of the offense like they should be.

1. Use Brooks on rollouts more and puh-lease bootleg him a time or two each game!! Yes I know they used him that way in the GB game. But it was what two times?? C'mon...he's a MOBILE QB. For Pete's sake get him mobile 5-6-7 times a game. I'm not saying run the dude every down but gimme a break!

2. This one really gets me. THROW THE BALL DEEP!!! Hello?? Can anyone on the team (or the face of this earth) explain why we haven't gone deep yet??? Once again, I'm not saying send everyone deep every play. But, AT LEAST send them deep once or twice a game.

Even if Brooks makes zero yards. Even if Brooks overthrows every reciever. Please try. Of course, I'd be more than glad to take a TD if it happens. For the record, I don't think saying "they're waiting for the right time" is a good reason either. There already have been right times. It might not be a game breaking run or pitch & catch, but please TRY!!

Someone back me up here. Can I get a witness??

I agree on the deep ball. ROY Stallworth is too fast not to throw the deep ball. The one thing AB has done pretty good in the past is throw a high pretty long ball. ROY Stallworth cant be covered deep. Give it a shot. They havent tried one yet. Im betting this week will be the one.

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

Two things first :

1. Can anyone tell me who is Roy Stallworth ??? Seen this before .

2. Ever notice old time radio\'s ??? They had 2 dials , one for changing the station if you did not like what was being said and the other for either turning it up or turning it off . I realize that was a simpler time but it sure seems a lot more intelligent then pressing a bunch of keys to form words and left clicking the mouse to post what a person already has the ability to do . :casstet:

Now , you have a witness .

Here is speculation
Brooks is limited in his accuracy . Brooks has limited ability to hit the following routes under normal game conditions , The deep ball , the drop pass and almost any route requiring a soft thrown accurate pass . An example was in the Green Bay game , Favre hits the receiver in the end zone corner , the ball drops in right over Knights reach and into the receivers hands . Brooks is a hard ball pitcher of passes , pass completions are generally slants or out patterns , patterns that put the receiver in direct line for Brooks to throw a strike .

The Bootleg plays into this theory , Mc Carthy is a quarterbacks coach as well s a offensive coordinator . Who better to mask the problem ??? Brooks rolls out to avoid the pass rush at times but primarily to reset the receivers pattern . The unspoken language between receiver and quarterback is that if the quarterback is in trouble , break off the route and go to alternate route . This route is usually a hook route or a come back route , the new route puts the receiver directly in front of Brooks for him to deliver the fast ball . If Mc Carthy calls to many bootleggs the opposing defensive coordinator will focus his ends on containment rather than pass rush , and Mc Carthy will have cut off Brooks ability to reroute the receivers .

Brooks wanted a new contract , before the season . He held out to get his point across , he expressed his anger in the media and almost seemed desperate at times . The long standing distance between Loomis and Brooks agent was the guaranteed money .

Money that could not be taken away if he was released . Only time will tell ....

I know I said I wasn\'t going to acknowledge SAINTZ08 anymore, but here I am. I just can\'t sit here and NOT reply. According to SAINTZ08, every issue this team has lands directly on the shoulders of Aaron Brooks. He HATES Aaron Brooks. He talks about how excellent Brett Farves touch pass is. No one here would argue that, but how much more experience does Brett Have. Was he not once a raw AB himself. I\'d guess so. Brooks may never be Joe Montana, but it doesn\'t take Joe Montana to win football games...it takes a LOT of things. The QB can\'t throw it, catch it, and run with it. He needs 10 other people on the team with him, and sometimes one of those other 10 might have something to do with a problem.

Do you remember the TB game. The Saints needed a few first downs to run out the clock and end the game. On third down AB zipped a strike to Joe Horn. Joe dropped the ball, and after the game admitted it\'s one he should have caught. Was the Aaron\'s fault? If you ask SAINTZ08 he\'ll tell you something like...\"well, Aaron threw it too hard\". I mean jeesh...

Hey Saintz08, we all know you can\'t stand Aaron, but do us all a favor and get off it already. I\'m sure you\'re a great guy. Heck, I\'d probably enjoy talking football with you, but all this Aaron Bashing is gettin old man.

Alright, i don\'t agree with passing long......we are not a bomb team. I believe in the 9-12 yards move the ball down the field and let Deuce run and do more screens. I know you may say, we have Horn, Stallworth(no one faster), Pathon, but i feel looking at last year when we were behind every game and did pass long, we weren\'t real succesful. Maybe a couple big play opportunities per game, remember turnover ratio and not coming from behind.

However, I do agree totally with the bootleg. Where we really need to utilize this is in the red zone. With 5 potential threats, 3 listed above and Deuce and Sloan, it is alot for any team to watch, which gives Aaron an opportuntiy to rush for potential TD\'s or a first down in the red zone. I kept wishing we would do it against GB. Sitting with friends and saying, we sure shouldn\'t put Aaron out like a lamb to slaughter, like his cousin. But bootleg him near the endzone........Sloan quick post slant....Deuce screen, Stallworth or Pathon andHorn to the flag, Smith leading the bootleg block. Redzone success. Sorry I got excited and started to put the x\'s and o\'s

Who is Saintz08 and what is he trying to say? I mean, I understand about 1/2 of what he\'s trying to convey but the rest?? What? Some rambling about \'masking the problem\'. Then off on a tangent and off topic about Brooks, Loomis, an agent, and money?? Huh?? So my question is basically, do I ignore this guy or what??

I still think we should stretch the defense and bootleg Brooks with the Tight End dragging across as an option. Actually, I have no idea why more teams don\'t use the last part. Then again, maybe that\'s why I coach from the house and they do it from the field....

Billy here is the answer .

If you are 100% satisfied with Aaron Brooks .
If you are just happy the team is winning .
If you do not wonder about the whole contract extension issue .
If you never wonder why a drive stalls , time and time again .
If you have never looked at a high power offense and said if only .

Ignore all posts by saintz08 , consider him a blabbering idiot .

If you are fascinated by the x\'s and o\'s .
If you have reviewed tape of a game more than once .
If you understand the difference 6 inches makes in a quarterback .
If you know how the angle of delivery changes an offense .
If you see the defense line up and say , this would work .
If your not content with the thought of they lost .

Give the posts by saintz08 a read , do not have to agree .
Thats kind of why these forums exist , for individuals to express their views even if they are redundant .

Where is Gumbo ??????????

By the way , ROY is a good one ...

To answer your question Billy, Saintz08 has good football knowledge that is clouded by his obsession with Aaron Brooks. Much like a jilted lover gone bad, i.e. Fatal Attraction. But if you can cut through all his needless bashing of Aaron he usually has something decent to say but as of late many are trying to ignore him because he insists on whining every chance he gets about our starting Q.B. He reminds one of another fan in a another forum last year that kept bashing Turley every chance he got until it was neither fun or classy and everyone got fed up real quick. And no matter what stats he tries to convey in his arguements, it\'s a mute point and he just doesn\'t get it.

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

For those that have chosen to ignore Saintz08 keep doing so .

For those that wonder how the Saints could lose to the Lions here is how . This might take some tape rolling but well worth the time .

Note the defensive ends on the lions , they have begun to spread wider on Brooks and go contain assignment . This is eliminating Brooks emergency route change . The safeties are playing the inside routes more so and making it harder for Brooks to hit the inside hook routes . When Brooks does hit the routes the safties make the receivers pay .

Brooks once again is a fast ball pitcher , who is extremely limited in his passing ability . Brooks has no touch on the ball and cannot throw the touch pass . Brooks cannot hit the deep ball and that limits the offense . For those that say Brooks is only in his second season , Harrington has the ability in only his second game . Brooks is throwing the passes to hard on certain routes , watch balls sail through Sloans hands time and time again , high hard balls are very hard to catch . To further prove a point , go to the Stallworth touchdown and see what the trainer has to do to Stallworths forearm after he catches a rocket pass .

Brooks inability to hit these passes , limits the offense , puts the receivers with their backs too the defenders and makes his reads harder to get . The only difference between the 3 wins and the one loss is defense . The defense could not get the big turnovers and stops which shorten Brooks playing field .

One other note : special teams . There appears to be no wedge blocking on Kick off returns , it\'s either that or Beer man has developed a nasty tendecy to go to the sidelines immediately .

whodatsaintsfan26 09-30-2002 02:54 PM

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

I see Beerman going to the sidelines way too much. I would like to see Stallworth get a shot a kick returns. Secondly I agree with the fact that brooks is a fast ball pitcher, but if you hit a reciever in his hands, chest, or the numbers it should be caught. A high hard pass is no excuse for David Sloan. The touchdown I think had to be thrown that hard in my opinion to get it in there to stallworth. Brooks does need to work on his touch passes and long balls, but he has thrown some nice long balls in the past and I cant see him just losing the touch on it. They havent given him an opportunity to throw down field enough. When you have a reciever that runs a 4.2 or 4.3 40 he should be running some flys. Throw the ball down field to him and let him make a play.

FWtex 09-30-2002 07:19 PM

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

I like brooks but he does not have the skill at this time to throw the deep ball. On deep routes AB just launches the ball and prays something happens. Brooks is a stike thrower. Give him a reciever target going across the field and he\'ll get the ball there. He has a problem judging the reciever an a straight fly pattern.

AB is a Pocket passer! sure he can run the ball but he is most effective in the pocket. When a qb rolls out the field of play is much smaller. The saints have(before injuries) receivers that can spread the field open and that is where a pocket passer is needed. I think brooks has and continues to develop the natural feel for the pass rush.

billyh1026 09-30-2002 07:47 PM

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

Once again, I say....use AB as the mobile QB he is and throw the friggin ball deep a few times a game!!! Forget this making him a pocket QB BS. The stuff they\'re asking him to do Jake can do for Pete\'s sake!! I\'m not saying Jake\'s a better QB than AB or vice-versa. Both have their pluses and minuses. And I\'m not saying I want them to run AB all over the field every play, but if they plan on making AB the QB of this team then puh-lease use his strengths and those of the receivers too. Roll out AB every now and then. Drag Sloan across the field with him as an option on bootlegs. Or even a naked bootleg sometimes. There\'s a dozen more plays they can do similar to these. Pick one? Any one of\'em but use it once in a while. How many times has AB thrown the ball further than 30 yards in the air this year??? I\'m betting the Lions did it more in one 1/2 of a game than we\'ve done all year. There\'s 2 ways you can build a team. Have a system and get players that fit the system or make your system fit the players you\'ve got/get. Good staff\'s combine both. I think for the most part the Saints have players to fit the system they want to run they just need to tweek it a little to make it fit the players.

Im with you on the long ball. Detroit had a rookie corner starting Sunday. If you cant pick on a rookie corner who can you pick on? I havent seen one pass this year that could be considered a deep ball. Stallworth is faster than most corners in this league and has shown he is a playmaker. Give it a shot. It might not work but it will keep the defense honest. A couple of deep balls and no one is cheating up. It should open up the middle of the field and give Duece some more running room.

saintz08 10-01-2002 12:02 AM

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

Here is the real kicker .

One on one man coverage with a rookie cornerback , and Brooks can not get the ball there . Stallworth can open up on a fly route and put serious turf between him and a defender and Brooks can not get it in the same zip code . Wonder why it is never used ??? Mc Carthy does not feel the need to advertise .....

Lions were using the safeties to cover down on the under routes in the game , they were begging the Saints to go deep . Brooks has not hit a long one yet on the fly route .The sad part is that with Brooks being almost unable to hit any route other than the curl , slant or out the receivers are getting killed out there . With the receivers only catching balls with their backs to the defenders , the defenders are hitting them hard . Did anyone see Horn holding his back ???

What is really beginning to bother is Brooks leadership . During the Lions game you see shots of Harrington discussing things with the offense . The Saints sideline has Brooks either getting chewed , standing alone or talking to Brian Cox . There seems to be no urgency on Brooks part to get the guys pulled together and get the game turned around . There are those that say Brooks needs time , he has had 2 years , Harrington 2 games .

The Pats and Raiders showed everyone how to beat Pittsburgh, now lets see if the saints coaching staff was watching. I think Duece should have a huge part in the passing game this week, if Kendrell Bell is out I think Duece becomes very dangerous through the air. Open up the defense with the pass and Oakland showed the run will work. They only ran 12 times, but put up a huge average. Dont let up on them. I think Brooks does his best work from the no huddle and Pittsburgh has had problems against theat this season. Lets hope the Saints use the game plan from the Pats and Raiders and not Cleveland. P.S. Please let one fly deep this weekend. Complete or not just let one go.

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

The Pittsburgh game stinks , it smells of Lion defeat potential .

First of all the Saints most likely have no film on Maddox , similar to Harrington . Although Harrington is the better of the 2 qb\'s in my mind , still no tendencies to study. Venturi will most likely hold the defense in cover 2 and make Maddox prove he can hit the open men , at least for the first half .

The big back is still a problem against the defense , the bus may shake a few cobb webs off in this game . His success is going to be related to Maddox though , if Maddox is on the bus will roll . The Bus may not get the start but he should get in there .

Thomas is going to be a target going into this one , that Q-Tip on his hand tells opposing Qbs he is less likely to make the pick .

Am sure Cowher would love to take Haslett behind the wood shed in his own house , and will most likely inspire his team to do so .

Duece has proven himself worthy in the league , he should start getting his own dance partner soon , a linebacker devoted to him. If Brooks cannot get the ball deep and pull the safeties out the inside routes are going to become a real problem for the receivers . Detroit was jamming things up pretty good , the safeties are playing shallow because they do not respect Brooks\'s deep ball .The Saints should never see safeties up with a receiver that has 4.2 speed , unless Brooks simply cannot accurately get the ball there .If that is the case , the blitzes are soon to come and often . The Steelers game will tell what the N.F.L. knows about Brooks .

SAINTS08, I have to agree with you. The Saints need to throw the long ball at least some to loosen the defense. However with Stallworth out for this game, it looks like the Beerman will have to produce in the offense too. I\'m not sure how much of a factor Horn\'s injury will be. But I think they need to let loose the long ball just to loosen things up for Deuce.I see this as a tough game for the Saints if for no other reason than our secondary. The Steelers have some awesome weapons on offense. The Bus may have lost a step but the recievers sure haven\'t. Burress with his height, Ward seems to be open all the time and don\'t forget this name...Antwaan Randel-el, this guy seems to be open all the time also.Of all their weapons he scares me the most. Oh well, i just hope they don\'t spot the Steelers 20 points and try to come back from it. Come out from the getgo and keep going.

The difference in this game is who\'s special teams play better. Field position will determine everything. ESPECIALLY in this game. Maddox will be blitzed an ungodly amount of times. Venturi ain\'t gonna make Maddox prove anything. He\'s gonna realize that he made a huge mistake by not blitzing a new QB last week and won\'t make the same mistake this week. 3 step drops or not. “The quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard wil so much apply here it\'s not even funny. Lewis, Gowin, and Carney will be the goat\'s or hero\'s this week. Whether they get the ink or not is another story.

Its amazing what happens when the running game works and you drop the long ball. What a move Pathon put on Scott. He had two great routes today. What can you say about Duece? 3-0 when Duece has 100 1-1 without. Dont fall behind by 20 give DMAC the ball and the game goes pretty well. Brooks another good game. No turnovers and Charles Grant had a great game.

How about Brooks to Pathon today was that deep enough? Oh, It\'s Dante\' Stallworth.
Also, why throw deep if Dante\' can catch a 5 yd. pass (Rice like) and turn it into a 60 yd. touchdown. That is just as nice.

What?!? are you talking about saintz08 or whatever you call it. Harrington has had one game.. He is no Aaron Brooks. He lit up an ailing Saints secondary which is not that good to begin with. When have the saints averaged near 30 points per game in the past. Aaron isn\'t the problem, he is the solution. Right now our defense is the problem. Stallworth was out, Horn was gimpy and we still ran up 32 points. What does Brooks have to do? grow wings and fly. IMHO you are nuts!

whodatsaintsfan26 10-07-2002 03:02 PM

2 things about our offense that drive me nuts!!

Saint2 you throw the deep ball to keep the defense honest. It opens up the running lanes for Duece to run. The safeties cant cheat up it there is a chance that Brooks will drop one on them. ROY Stallworth is a playmaker and can turn a 5 yard pass into a 60 yard TD, but if you watch the last couple of times they have thrown that ball against Detroit the defense was all over it. You can only run that play so many times before a defense will shut it down. You have to use him in a different roll somtimes. Fontenot isnt going to get out there and make that block every game. It worked twice time to try something new.
