Interesting sean payton quote

Interesting sean payton quote
"I was disappointed even after looking at the film today and seeing that the looks were not complex or difficult, and some of that is some of those looks are fine to run the ball against as well, and that’s something I regret – not running it enough, or even more in that second quarter.”

at least he knows he doesn't run when the situation is favorable. But he still a second year head coach.

Yeah, but is he going to try something different? Hey! I have an idea. Why don't we try running Pierre Thomas? Yeah! That might work. It sure as hell can't hurt. OH wait..........put Pierre Thomas AND Reggie in the backfield at the same time. WOW, what an idea.

Pierre Thomas? HAH!

The kid must have leprosy or something, Payton just refuses to put Pierre anywhere near the huddle. I'm like you Joe, this kid has some serious grit to him, he can provide us with another dimension - but it's like Sean's always too busy tinkering with the pass play instead of being creative with the run.

I knew we were in trouble in the beginning of the 2nd Qtr due to the Offensive play calling (abandoning the running game way to soon). Saints were facing a 2nd down and 3 in their own territory, as Karney was taken out for the series. Karney should have been on the field blocking for Reggie and establishing the line of scrimmage. With 1 running back in the backfield (usually Reggie) , defenses have adapted by stacking the box and/or blitzing Brees.

Two things I have learned over the last 9 games, Brees is very ineffective with pressure in his face, and Reggie does not know how to pick up the blitz. Since Duece got hurt, Reggie has yet to rush for 100 yds. in Coach Payton's "featured back set". Averaging just 3.8 yards per carry, Reggie was more effective as the complimentary RB to the bruising , pound it down your throat running back we no longer have.

guess there's always next week as I hope Pierre Thomas gets more carries. In the 6 games PT has played, he has carried the ball 6 times for 40 yds ... 6.7 yds per carry. It's mind boggling that this kid got ZERO touches vs. SEA, JAC, and STL.

I am glad you found this. This goes to what I have been saying on other threads about failing to make adjustments. When you see something going on the field you have to make adjustments not keep going with your game plan. So I am lead to believe that they didn't see what the Rams were doing during the game. Which really proves they didn't make the adjustments. Can't blame the play calling but you can definately blame the coaches for failing to make the adjustments during the game. Our run blocking was good, pass blocking we were being out-manned.

I watched the game on tape after knowing the outcome ( I'm a glutton for punishment - I had to see it for myself). Stecker breaks off 13 yards on the opening carry and then disappears. Karney worked harder in warmups than he did in the game. I read Payton's quote this morning on the Saints site and was at least relieved that he realized that he could have called a few more runs. Perhaps for next week Karney and his trailing cast will be allowed to give our defense a much needed rest as they work some ground clock and open up some free passing lanes for Brees and company. I hope that Sean's retrospective-run-revelation becomes a critical part our forward plan for success.

Unless PT or Stecker(I hate to say it) are more involved with the running game(PT preferably) we will not be able to run well enough. I do not care what Reggie or SP say, Reggie CANNOT carry the load. I hear people talk about he is similar in size to Warrick Dunn or Westbrook. Ummmm, no he is not. Look at West brooks legs, they look like tree stumps, even WD legs are larger than Reggie's. Both of those two are a good two inches shorter than Reggie and weigh a bit more than him.

However with PT being a rookie and Reggie first year feature back, neither of the know how to pick up a blitz very well yet. Reggie never had to pick up the blitzer last year, that was Deuce or Karney, Reggie was always in motion or pulling out of the backfield to catch a pass. Until PT can learn the blitz pick-up he will not be in the game, you cannot just put him in on running plays, you have to be able to block or ctach passes out of the backfield. If I have to choose between Reggie or PT catching passes it is Reggie.

I am rambling as I have so much on my mind that I want to get out.

Is it Reggie Bush fault he only got 7 carries? Reggie Bush was doing great, he had over a 100 yard rushing and receiving, why don't you criticize Drew Brees and Sean payton.

You really don't have a clue. Reggie isn't a featured back.
