Will coach learn from this

"That was a big swing of emotions," Brees said. "When we got that safety, I think we all thought, 'OK, now we get two first downs and we win this game.' This is our chance. This is our opportunity. It is staring us right in the face, and then, when you don't, and you give up the ball right back to them with a chance to go down and tie the game, it reminded me of last year in the playoffs against Philadelphia. We kind of mishandled an exchange."

Payton will learn from this bad experience. In fact, if he studies the tape of how Gruden handled his aggressiveness with control, he'll be an even better play-caller for the future.

Re: Will coach learn from this

I like the guy too, but I wonder if we might be better served having a o coordinator calling the plays. That was a terrible call late in the game I dont think an offensive coordinator would have the guts to make a call like that at midfield leading by 3 points with 3+ minutes left. At a point in the game when you want to limit the chances for a mistake you dont have 3 or 4 players handle the ball per play. Center gives the ball to the qb, qb gives the ball to a rb. That sure makes more sense. That was not an execution problem that was a playcalling problem.
Hopefully he learned a lesson there is a time and place to be cute and flashy. Running the ball or even having Brees take a shot down the field is acceptable. When you are leading a game with 3 minutes left is not a time to be creative. That play did cost us the game, even though we were lucky to still be in the game, when you have the lead with 3 minutes to go it doesnt matter how you got there you have a chance to win. Hold on to the ball, try to get a 1st, no wild crazy double reverses and if that doesnt work punt the ball and make them have to drive the whole field to beat you.
He should have learned that lesson from the 1st Carolina game. Dont try that long fg cause if it doesnt work you give the other team half the field to work with. With this bending and breaking defense they need more than 50 yds to work with.
One other lesson I hope he picked up on is that when your kicker pulls a groin muscle cut him or swallow your pride and pick up another till he gets healthy enough to kick. That is why we dont have Carney Payton couldnt stand having 2 kickers. When your kicker is injured either dont play him or get a backup.

Re: Will coach learn from this

Look what the did with a completely revamped team last year. We know what he's capable of and how good of a coach he is. He'll learn from his mistakes and we'll be fine. Remember when he took this job, we were in a rebuilding stage and he took us to the playoffs right away. Cut him some slack. Hopefully we'll finish out strong and have a productive offseason. We're beating ourselves out there... we're much better than this.

I'm looking forward to some good football for the rest of the year and hopefully we'll get a look at some of our young guys... Alleman, Young, and Meachem especially.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.

Re: Will coach learn from this

It is getting harder for me to trust what Coach P is doing. If he can't see the light about Shanle, Simminogood, and Jason David, I just don't understand the thought process he has.

Our playoff run is all but dead. Why not put in the new guys? WHY IS SIMMONS NOT PLAYING?!?!?

Play them coach! What is it going to hurt now?????

I agree with you, give Sean more time as a head coach in the NFL and you'll see an improvement with him.
