Aaron Stecker quote
WWL - AM870 • FM105.3 | News • Talk • Sports | OnDemand@1350 - Saints win keeps playoff hopes alive

Quote:
"I learned early when I came into the league that everybody is fast and the quickest way to go up field is north and south," said Stecker of his aggressive running style. "When I was in college I tried to do all those moves and try to get to the sidelines and stuff but everybody is fast. Usually when you're running sideline to sideline that's what the defense wants you to do so I just try to find a hole, put my head down and try to get what I can get."

Makes you kind of wonder what Stecker could have done if not stuck behind guys like Dunn, Alstott, Michael Pittman, Thomas Jones, McAllister, Antowain Smith, and Reggie Bush throughout his career.

Reggie Bush can't run North-South, because it only takes a swat from an opposing defensive player to knock Reggie to the ground.

Re: Aaron Stecker quote

I would disagree with that. If you actually believe that, then you must not watch any of the games. The one play that always comes to mind when I think of Reggie actually being able to be a tough runner is during last year's 49ers game where he broke like two tackles and then got wrapped up and drove a huge pile all the way down to goal line. The guy is a beast, and yes, he does too much dancing and too much east-west running, but I really believe that he'll improve in the future. He's still learning the position, and as I said in another thread, Payton is using him all wrong. I think they need to give Bush the chance to run up the middle more.

Exactly.

Reggie can't run up the middle because Sean Payton doesn't give him the ball up the middle.

When Reggie has had a few carries up the middle, he's gashed teams. Go back and watch our games against Seattle and Carolina. He'd gash them for 6-9 yards at a time up the middle.

No, Bush doesn't run anyone over, but he actually bounces and spins of tackles to get extra yardage. He gets just as much yards after the initial hit as Deuce, he just does it in a different manner.

Like this guy said, watch the games, man.

Anyone who ever says "Reggie Who?" obviously only watches highlights and has no general understanding of what Sean Payton and the Saints' offense are actually doing.

Re: Aaron Stecker quote

maybe Sean has learned something over the past couple of games. Keep it simple stupid. KISS.
I know bush needs to be in the flats but he also needs to keep teams from defending so heavily out there by pounding it up the middle a little bit more. Keep the defense honest. They expect the unexpected when they play us. So trick them a bit and be more conventional. That is unexpected.

Re: Aaron Stecker quote

I like Reggie. I think he really tries hard and wants to be a good football player, but... if it's 3rd and 1 then I'm handing the ball to Stecker between the tackles or I'm throwing a quick slant to whoever is in the slot. Now a slow screen, draw, or pass play that gets checked down to a back, I think Reggie is the man. It's just simple physics, Reggie is not built to pound the middle. period.
I know I know, Reggie had some success right up the middle a few times in the Seattle and Carolina game, but the defense was spread out and the Oline made a hole Hollis Thomas could have run threw. And you can get away with that a few times, but if Reggie is the premier running back then I can assure you that will get shut down quick, just like it did in both those games in the 2nd half.
Reggie is a great athlete, and when he's used properly he will be a huge factor. I just hope the coaches use him properly before he gets a career ending injury or worse ends up on another team's roster where they do use his speed.
