Jonathan Vilma

Reports say Vilma is looking to get out of NY. He is a great young player who has been over looked by many because he is on the Jets. He is currently playing in the 3-4 scheme, but has played in 4-3. He actually posted better numbers in the 4-3. He is a guy that can really help our less then scary linbacking corp. I think we should seriously go after this guy

It all depends on what they're asking for him and how he's recovering from his injury. If he's in good health, I wouldn't mind surrendering a 3rd for the guy.

New York Newsday reports that Jets LB Jonathan Vilma's knee surgery is not a run-of-the-mill procedure, according to an orthopedic surgeon with knowledge of the situation. Dr. Johnny Benjamin, an orthopedic surgeon based in Florida, believes that Vilma's knee is seriously damaged and he might be having microfracture surgery. "It takes about a year to fully rehab from it and usually it's not until the second year that they're back to their old self," Benjamin said, citing previous cases.

NT Dewayne Robertson and ILBs Eric Barton and Jonathan Vilma are the three most awkward fits for the 3-4 scheme. The Jets will likely try to engineer trades for them, particularity Robertson and Vilma.

NT Dewayne Robertson would be the player I would target in a trade.

Trade our #1 (this year or next) and Stinchcomb for Roberston and their second round pick.

On the line you have added Roberston a former #1 (#4 in 2003) that is lost in the 3-4 but is a top notch DT in a 4-3. This is hard for me say but you let young walk. If you can figure out a way to feep him do it.

They dump the salary of first rounders that do not fit the 34 and get 2 #1 to address the voids left. They also get the RT they need for the OL.

No we are king of the draft in round 2. Two picks #6 (520) and #10(480) can be packaged together to move all the way up to #16 in round 1. So there are plenty of possibilities to move back into round 1 with these two picks. Or we can play the trade game through out the draft the rest of the way.

I loved Vilma coming out of college, I thought he would be the perfect fit for the Saints. He did have three great seasons before this past injury riddled season occurred, so maybe he is worth the gamble. If he can comeback next season, maybe a 3rd round pick is worth the gamble. Although anytime I hear the word microfracture, that puts up a serious red flag.

Re: Jonathan Vilma

heck i'll take him for a 3rd if he's not all the way healthy, its not like we do anything with our drafts anyways....remember last years 3rd rounder? what about the year before then? so why not take a chance on a proven guy comin off an injury....cant be worse then siminslow

i am talking about robertson, i would trade a 4th for vilma that could turn in to a 3rd based on incentives

Re: Jonathan Vilma

Sorry I reread my post and forgot to keep vilma in the trade. Yes I would trade for Robertson. the last thing I would call him is average. He is lost in the 34. When the Jets were in a 43 he was far from average.

The key is obtain their second round pick. This would give us cap room to sign FA. Without destroying the draft. Maybe your right and the jets may have to swap thirds to make it work.

Now this all hinges on LT. Can Bushrod step up At LT or do we need to draft a LT, Brown moves to RT. Yes this is a move that must happen and No I will not stop harping on it.

Now San Diego does not have picks in the 2nd or 3rd round this year so moving up into the bottom of the first without paying much is very possible. Two picks #6 (520) and #10(480) in the second, can be packaged together to move all the way up to #16 (1000) in round 1.

I would stay at 6 and pick the best player available DT, LB or CB. The key thing to remember is we must move ahead of some of the defense starved teams picking in front of us through out the draft. Otherwise we will be picking from defensive left overs in each round. That means a lot of offensive picks would result. Thats where trading the the #10 in round two comes into play and stock piling picks. Now If a gem falls into your lap you take it, of course.

Bufallo, New England, Minnesota and Chicago all have extra picks in the 3rd. So they are players in the second.

Oakland, Baltimore, Denver and San Diego have no picks in the third. So they should be open to trading back in order to get those picks back.

I know first round picks are the holy grail to most but Not to me. You get two good proven players that are needed and have doubled up your picks in round two to become a power broker in that round. That sounds like a win win for all parties involved. The jets dump two first rounders that have no future in NY and get a RT(FA in 2009) they need. All going to the AFC.

BUT Vilma's knee injury scares me.

Vilma will return to Jets?

Jets LB Jonathan Vilma will also return, said Tannenbaum. Vilma missed the final nine games of the season following knee surgery. Tannenbaum said Vilma provides depth, but he wasn't as adamant about Vilma returning as he was with Pennington. -- Newark Star-Ledger

I'd pass. He's great, but I agree. Too much risk. We already have Deuce and Reggie with knees, MM with the knee, and Meachem with the knee so having another palyer with a knee injury is asking for trouble.

BTW, I saw Dorsey strip the ball out, but is he expected to be 100% for training camp?
