Question on the Colston/Smith situation

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Correct me if Im wrong, but after next season both are free agents. If thats the case isnt it important that we redo at least one of their contracts this offseason since we can only franchise one of the two? ...

Question on the Colston/Smith situation

Correct me if Im wrong, but after next season both are free agents. If thats the case isnt it important that we redo at least one of their contracts this offseason since we can only franchise one of the two? I know we need to do a lot of work with FAs but I think we need to start with those two guys before we end up in a situation where we could possibly lose one of the two and just create another hole on this team. If Im wrong on their contracts please let me know.

Re: Question on the Colston/Smith situation

You are correct...although Colston will be a restricted free agent and the Saints could offer him a one year deal for three seperate amounts of money. The low tender would be a small amount of money and if someone else signed him to an offer and the saints didnt match it, we would receive a 7th round pick. The mid level tender compensation would be a first round pick. The high level tender would be a first and a third.

Re: Question on the Colston/Smith situation

My belief is the Saints will do everything in their power to lock up Colston, and maybe play a little hardball with Smith. I can see the Saints putting the tag on Smith when his contract is over, and hope to iron out a long term deal. Now if Smith happens to have a sour year, then all bets are off, and he gets to walk. Overall, I think Colston is a safer choice for locking up long term vs Smith.

Re: Question on the Colston/Smith situation

Coming into the this season, I was screaming for us to pay Will Smith top dollar. Then training Camp started and...........................
he was what seemed to be 35 pounds over-weight, and stayed that way all season long.

Re: Question on the Colston/Smith situation

I think Colston is the priority. WR is a difficult position to draft (see last year). Colston is a quiet leader, great work ethic, very productive

Smith did not play last year like a guy shooting for a max contract. He is a great player, but might not be worth what he thinks.

Colston needs to be re-worked today.
Smith, not so much. Let's see what he does next year, because this year he was abyssmal

I wonder why he allowed himself to get out of shape.

He hasn't even recieved that HUGE payday yet.
