We've got a good shot at landing a starter and instant upgrade just about anywhere at the #10 overall spot. There's a lot of talk about trading down which I'm usually all for, but there's some interesting scenarios that might develop for us to jump back into the late first round.

Let's say we draft McLovin, er, McKelvin at 10. We have our CB spot secured for the immediate future. If someone like Dan Connor or Kentwan Balmer falls far enough, what do you think about trading our 2nd and 4th (or maybe next year's 3rd) round picks for him? I wouldn't touch Balmer with a #10 overall pole but at say, 27 (San Diego with no other picks until the fifth round) or 28 (Dallas with its second first rounder) he'd be kind of tempting.

Or, flip it around, say we do get Rivers at 10, we can then slide back up to grab one of the corners that might fall far enough (Cason or dare I dream it -- Cromartie?). Two immediate starters at two positions of need.

Or, hell, I played linebacker in high school so here's a fun one: Rivers at 10 and Connor at 28. We have our linebacking corps set up for at least the next 5 years with Fujita the veteran captain at sam, Connor the heir apparent at mike, and Rivers running around blowing up plays as the will. I love that scenario.

I'm content at where we're at in the second round... we'll land a quality player there. Trading back into the first would probably cost us our first next year. When San Fran traded back into the first round to select Joe Staley, they paid a premium.

Yeah, but look at who's been running the Frisco front office the past couple years. Say what you want about Loomis, but the man is a pretty shrewd bargainer.

ESPN - NFL draft-pick value chart - NFL

It would probably cost us our 2nd and 3rd to move up to either the Chargers or Cowboys' slot using that chart (not as bad as I thought). We have a lot of holes to fix and our picks in the 2nd and 3rd are pretty high. Unless there is a player we really really like, I'd like to hold on to our picks though.

I'd hold onto the picks to, given the option. Trading down from our top pick is still making the most sense to me.

Yeah, it was just a thought. This draft is so loaded I'd love for us to trade down, there's going to be so many talented guys in the middle rounds that slide for no good reason that an extra 3rd and 4th could turn up some great starting level talent.

Finding someone to trade is the problem . IMHO there are only 8 elite picks . I think there is alot of depth in this draft . RB is a strong position. There will be some good Rbs picked in rds 2-4. Cb is also a position that is deep. Barring some player falling out of the top 8 and some other team wanting them badly I don't think we will entertain many offers to trade out of #10 DE is another deep position in this draft. Pass rushers will be all the rage after the way the Giants won the SB. Not so sure we should pass up one.
