Nice article at wwltv.com. Good to see that Meachem is reaching out for help. Sound like a good kid who has found a good mentor in Patten.

“From a humility standpoint, that takes a lot for a kid of that stature,” Patten said. “When you’re a first-round draft pick a lot of times this day in time, let’s be real, they come out cocky, ‘I’m the man, I know it all, I’ve already got it down pat.’ For him to humble himself and come to a guy and be like, ‘Hey, I need you to help me make it to the next level, help me do what’s expected of me.’

“First and foremost, he feels like he let everyone down last year, let alone his family and his team,” Patten said. “But more importantly, he feels so badly because most of all, he let himself down.

“He’s such a high character guy, he has great work ethic. He would never make the excuse it’s his knee. He just says, ‘Hey, I’m not getting it done.’ He never blamed it on his knee. The reality of it is that’s what it was.”

Maybe this falls under the stigma, of "Payton type of player". All of us are guilty of judging players too quickly, as being a bust, after only a season or two. Just remember all the hard work these guys went through to get here. I think he'll be fine, and will make a helluva receiver in the years to come.

i don't know if anyone else remembers this but during a pregame warm-up last year againest I think the Panthers Meachem approached Steve Smith for advice on route running, now Patten. It seems to me like this kid is hungry. I definitely think our receiving core will be much better with him. He will show why he was a #1 pick.

I think he will be special this season. He asking for help which is a good thing because alot of players let their pride get in the way.

Meachem is definitely showing he has excellent character. He is doing the correct things by seeking out help to improve his game. I am pulling for him to have a big year, and not just because I am a Saints fan. I love to see guys like him make it big. This is very refreshing in a day and age that has way too many showboat cocky type of players. Meachem and Colston could eventually be the duo that re-writes the NFL history books. Well, that is a little premature and extreme, but they do have a great shot of being an excellent pair.

This goes a long way to raising my perception that drafting him may not have been a huge error. Coming to camp overweight (as a WR) and out of condition is no way to impress the fans.

Lets hope this is the shape of things to come
