Saints a Work in progress

The Daily Advertiser - www.theadvertiser.com - Lafayette, LA

"I think we've begun the process," Payton said. "(General Manager) Mickey (Loomis) has done a great job of getting the jumpstart on the evaluations. That's something you're always trying to do.
"We talked at the end of the season about areas that we need to improve on. You're constantly looking at your roster and finding ways that you think, either through free agency or the draft, that eventually will help your final 53."

Judging by the offseason acquisitions, the biggest areas of concern were cornerback, linebacker and defensive line. The Saints picked up two linebackers in Jonathan Vilma and Dan Morgan, three cornerbacks in Randall Gay, Anwar Phillips and Greg Fassitt, and two defensive ends in Bobby McCray and Josh Savage.

In addition, the Saints signed a veteran quarterback in Mark Brunell and three wide receivers, including former LSU standout Skyler Green.
