? For the Old Timers

I don't know how many long suffering fans are on this board but here's a question for you old timers. What was the draft like before it was so hyped? Did people even keep up with it? By looking at the Saints draft history it doesn't seem like people had a reason to even keep up with how they drafted. I'm 26 and the first draft I remember keeping up with was in '96 when we picked up Molden in the first. I'm too young to remember the drafts of the 80's and I thank God for that. Lindsay Scott, Alvin Toles, Shawn Knight, who the hell were those guys?

... about the same as the number of members...

The expectation of the draft was about the same as far back as I can remember (70's), maybe even more so because you knew the guy your team chose was going to be there for a looooong time.

The hype not even close.

Lol, so true. How about the fans who have been suffering for 30+ years.

I don't know if you call it suffering... I mean its been amusing I would say. Yeah sure just about everyone has a SB under there belts but how many can say they pulled off the River City Relay... or lose 60 plus yards on a fumble and get it back to the line of scrimage during Manning's days. How about a kick off that goes into the endzone and the players let it go thinking its a touch back, walk off the field and the other team grabs it for a touchdown. Oh the memories...

ONLY IN NEW ORLEANS.

Been there from square one. The good, the bad and the very ugly.

The draft has changed a lot in the way that fans had to follow college more to learn anything about the players. Now very few watch the games and rely on ESPN to do the 2 minute recaps. Others do not even bother till the end of the season before they really start looking at players. So the media decides more than they should how is good and who is not. In the old days it was a year long review by fans around the water coolers. We use to swap tapes of college games when the VHS came out. Times have changed and I am not sure it is for the best. The internet has changed it a lot.

Almost 48 now and I've been there like a few of you from day one. The draft was still important but certainly not as visible. What did they have back in the early days, like 200 rounds, so it was pretty diluted in my opinion.

I only followed the first 10 rounds, everyone after that was Mr. Irrelevant.

To me the draft now is more exciting then some of the games we're made to watch.

I wouldn't change teams for any reason. I know I get very upset at times and spout off but I would never trade the last 40 years for anything in the world. The bad times are what makes the good times so sweet. I just hope someday soon we can get the monkey off everyone's back with a Superbowl win.

The Saints have a loyal following because of the people. Cajuns, coonasses, creoles or whatever you want to call yourself are like pit bulls when it comes to loyalty, they bite and hang on for dear life and yes we always love the underdog, which begs the question, "if the Saints become a dynasty would they lose that mystique?" I say no, but you never know.

Dude I almost choked on my coffee reading 'Saints' and 'dynasty' in the same sentence.

We would be in lines with the Steelers. I mean they have their fans and all the SB's they won they still there and not so hated by everyone.

What I don't think we would end up is like the Cowboys or Pats. I find people getting really tired of the Pats.

One of the biggest differences I can remember was that our owner way back then use to make alot of money off our first round draft choices. Usually selling them away for lower draft picks that never really amounted to anything. Yes, even back then it was frustrating on draft day. Anyone remember Erxleben? Yes, we have solidified our history in the NFL hall of shame. :)
