CB or DE / DT That is the Question

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Elite CB's are rare talents. DE / DT's not so much. Does a great secondary make the D Line look good? Does a great D Line make the secondary shine?...

Re: CB or DE / DT That is the Question

If you have a great pass rushing DE that can actually put pressure on the quarterback that would make your not so great secondary look aloe better. I'm going out on a limb here but I would venture out to say that if smith and grant coulda got to the quarterback Jason David would not have got so exploited!

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
Is that quote used in reference to this discussion?

We have discussed this topic to death on this site and the answer is:
It depends on who you talk to.

If you watched the Giants/Pats Superbowl then it would seem pretty clear that the less time a QB or RB has to make a decision or if the QB/RB has no where to go but down, then your secondary does not need to be comprised of "elite" CB's.

So the front four are the most important on the defense.

Personally though, I'm a linebacker guy. I've been so since the early 90's (I don't know why).
We've been deprived of good to great linebackers for so long it's depressing.

I've got to agree with that one. We've been hurting there for a long, long time now. I had a buddy that I always met up with for games until I moved away - his oft repeated cry during defensive screw-ups was "WHERE'S THE LINEBACKERS!!??!!". I must've heard him scream that 10 times a game. He meant it.

Re: CB or DE / DT That is the Question

I think most of our pass rush deficiencies were the direct result of Simoneau and Shanle's abilities and in a way our DT's. Without LB's that can stop the run, our DE's were forced to maintain their position instead of getting aggressive. Our DT's are not good enough to demand 2 blockers, so that put even more pressure on our DE's. I'm not defending Grant and Smith, but they were at a disadvantage from the get go. With a Vilma, I think our Defense would have been 10X better.
Simoneau is a weak link and that is a horrible place to have a weak link. I took the liberty of looking up the NY Jets stats from 2005, and its kind of interesting. They did allow a great deal of rushing yards, but if you look little deeper into it, you'll find that they only allowed 3.9 y/a. A lot of this stat is the direct result of an inept offense. They had the #2 passing defense in the league that year as well.
I guess what I'm saying is, a very good MLB allows a lot more options in a Defensive Scheme. We were severely affected last year by this.
MLB allows DL to go at it.
DL goes at it and leads to rushed QB.
Rushed QB leads to less coverage time
Less coverage time leads to better DB stats.
