And Herm Says - Chester & Curt Set to Go

Special teams coach Mike Westhoff led the Jets through a brief special teams workout Wednesday afternoon, ending another day of camp. Players don’t have to attend meetings tonight, but they will be back tomorrow in pads at 8:30 AM.

The Jets host the New Orleans Saints Saturday night at the Meadowlands. Herman Edwards’ club will break camp next weekend after their annual contest with the cross-town Giants.

If you haven’t made it out to Hempstead, time is running out. The facilities are better than they have been in the past and this is a team that has made the playoffs the past two seasons. With that in mind, let’s go to Coach Edwards for a few thoughts…

The Big Guy: I talked to defensive tackle Chester McGlockton this afternoon; he's going to go. That doesn't mean he's going to play in half a game, but he is going to play a series or so. He's going to get in there and play. He wants to play. He's getting to the point he knows he's getting in veteran condition and when you watch him every once in a while, when he gets on the edge of somebody, it takes two guys to stop him.

He feels pretty good wind-wise. He just wants to get his footwork together and his movement with his hands and stuff like that.

Brownie: Linebacker Mark Brown is a very smart guy. He's athletic. He has some athletic ability. I like smart, athletic guys. I think he's a tough player. He has a good way about himself. He's really hard on himself when he makes mistakes. I think he is a guy that has some explosion in his body when he hits people, so I like that.

Drive for 40,000: Vinny Testaverde is a guy I think needs about 400 something (442) yards to reach 40,000 for his career. And so you know, that's in the back of my mind. I am trying to figure out a way to get him a pass or two. That's something I have been fighting with and trying to figure out the best way.

VT with 1st String: We are going to try to make Vinny play with the first line Saturday so whenever the first line is in there, we should change the quarterback out. Somewhere in the game, Vinny is going to go in with the first line.

C.Mart: Curtis Martin is going to play, and he is actually going to touch the ball. He's going to see it, touch it, and hold it. And then hopefully run.

He needs to get in a little bit of a groove and he will. We have enough time to get him in the groove.

Power Set: I don't want to go crazy with this, but the two tight-end package is kind of intriguing to me a little bit, getting both those guys in the game because they catch the ball inside a lot and those big guys are strong.

Dewayne Plane: Dewayne is going to get the Herman Edwards method when I came to the League. Being a rookie - you start and you play 'til you can't play anymore.
Everyone gets treated fair by me, but not everyone gets treated the same.

We need to get him in there and let him play. I just think that he can be a unique guy for us. You have confidence that he can handle that.

Flexibility up Front
Against the Run: You can put Dewayne and Chester on the two guards, and you can move Shaun and John outside and let them play the ends.

On Passing Downs: You move Shaun inside, maybe you move Dewayne to the three-technique and Shaun over to guard. Now you have two quick, big guys inside and then you move 99 (Bryan Thomas) and 94 (John Abraham) outside. And now you have two little boards on the outside run.
