new espn draft chat 4/21/08

Welcome to The Show! On Monday, Scouts Inc.'s Keith Kidd will stop by to take your NFL draft questions.
Kidd spent 14 years in NFL front offices before joining Scouts Inc., including eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, three as the director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns and three as the assistant director of pro scouting for the New England Patriots, where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams (2003 and 2004).

Send your questions now and join Keith on Monday at 3 p.m. ET for all the answers.

Keith Kidd: Hey guys, it's great to be here to talk about this upcoming week in regards to the draft, where each and every team has a chance to get better. I'll be in Bristol on Friday and here during the whole first round on Saturday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ricky (KC): there is no way that the Chiefs can select a QB in the first 2 rounds of the draft with their either needs, is there?

Keith Kidd: Anything's possible. If Ryan were to fall to them at five, there's always the "best player on the board" value pick. The Chiefs have so many needs, I don't know where to begin. They may be the first team on the board on the 2009 draft if things continue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kyle, Va: At what point does a team have to look at value over need in a draft? I ask because while the Bears need a LT, Mendenhall might be the best value on the board.

Keith Kidd: I think you have to always stick to your board. If you have two or three players with the same grade, you obviously have to go for need. Unfortunately for the bears, Cedric Benson has not hit. However, I would expect them to take the tackle, because the GM that picked Benson is still in Chicago. Mendenhall does make perfect sense.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cosmo (NYC): Rumors all over the place that Fins have deal with Jake Long...Wouldnt Dorsey be a better fit and take a OT with top pick in 2nd round?

Keith Kidd: They do not yet have a deal in place, however he is the only player they are "negotiating" with. Without a clear No. 1 to come off the board, he's probably the safest pick. Believe me, this thing will go right up until the deadline.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian (Cleveland): What are the chances that the St. Louis Rams select Glenn Dorsey instead of Chris Long or Vernon Gholston? Wouldn't Carriker do more damage at DE instead of DT?

Keith Kidd: That's a great point. If they're faced with Dorsey and Long, Dorsey probably comes off the board. Carriker could be kicked out to DE which would help the pass rush. A great pass rush helps all facets of the defense--just ask the Giants.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moe (IL): Patriots are in a tough spot if they stay there right? Do they go OL?

Keith Kidd: To me, they're in a tough spot because of the amount of money it would take to sign a player if they draft him. There'a a lot of different options here. They could take Albert or Gholston, or Keith Rivers from USC. Or they could start a run on the corners. The best-case scenario would be for a player like a McFadden or Ryan fall down the board, which makes other teams want to trade for the pick. Belichick is one of the best in the business at doing that,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zac (Oaktown): What possible June 1 cuts might be available to help the Raiders O-Line...and that does not include the addition by subtraction cut of Robert Gallery?

Keith Kidd: The possible June 1 cuts are overblown, because teams can cut players in March, and it won't count on the cap until next year. Those rules have changed. The options out there to be talked about would be a guy like LJ Shelton from Miami, Wayne Gandy, or re-signing Barry Simms. The market is very thin with few possibilities. The Raiders certainly do need to upgrade their offensive line. I don't think Green or Harris or the answer for a rookie QB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bruce (Des Moines, IA): If you were the Vikings, would you sign Jared Allen even though he carries the franchise tag?

Keith Kidd: Without a doubt I would trade for him. The Vikings are in a perfect position to make a run at the championship. Jared Allen improves a 32-ranked pass defense tremendously. The Achilles heel on this team, however, is Tavaris Jackson at QB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alon (Brooklyn): Any news on the Shockey trade front?

Keith Kidd: Stay tuned. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and Shockeyt would bring another unique dimension to a very explosive offense in New Orleans. There's also reports that New Orleans is trying to go to No. 2 to get Dorsey. That won't be cheap.

Keith Kidd: The Saints only have six picks, which will make it difficult to do a deal. They could do something with future draft picks to entice the Giants to move Shockey.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric (NY): How could Branden ALbert go from being Mel Kiper's number 2 guard two months ago, behind CHilo, to being a top 5 pick in his mock? I used to think he went based on tape but now i think he just goes upon what he hears from teams.

Keith Kidd: He picked the right time to get hot. The draft process is a long time, and these prospects are evaluated from 12-15 months. He's gotten hot in the workouts, and based on what they've seen, he has the chance to play left tackle in the NFL. It's a huge, huge risk. The scouts line them up, and the coaches tell you where guys fit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TK (brooklyn): Kidder, if Buffalo does not draft a WR with the 11th pick in the first round and goes a different driection, who will be available in the second for them to pick? Any chance they trade up into the late frist round or earlier in the second?

Keith Kidd: I think 11 is too high for the receivers. I think they'll start coming off the board from 19 and onward. I think they'll go with a corner, unless they feel Devin Thomas is the guy. A lot of great receivers have played in this league that were later-round picks or free agents. There is so much involved with what the receiver has to do, which makes it a tough position to evaluate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve (Toronto): If one of the top 5 draft candidates were to take a Brady Quinn/Aaron Rodgers-type of fall in the first round, who would most likely be the guy?

Keith Kidd: I don't see anyone in the top 5 who that will happen to. If a guy were to fall down the charts in the later part of the draft, it'd be Flacco, based on the competition level he faced in Delaware.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pete (NY): Keith the Eagles have 11 draft picks and Shepard do you see them trying to move up into the top 10? Philadelphia papers say they might be looking for a trade partner.

Keith Kidd: The Eagles have shown that they do have the history of going up in the draft. They have a strong possibility of going with an OT. They may be asking for a second-round pick for Lito Sheppard. Anything's possible on draft day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pete (Boston): Why take a WR first round? Detroit has gone 1 for 4, Minn lost out big time with Williamson, the Jags could never get Wilford going. Their are plenty more, what gives?

Keith Kidd: It's a passing league. Most offenses are designed to throw the football. Teams are trying to find those elite receivers who can come in and make an impact, and who can put numbers on the board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bobby (Toledo, OH): How come Kevin Jones hasn't been signed yet?

Keith Kidd: To me it's a medical issue. I don't think the player is fully healthy, or the asking price the agent may be wanting may be too high. However, most teams' focus has been the draft. Once it takes place, there'll be another run on FAs at a minimum number up until trading camp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam (New York): Is there any chance that Darren McFadden ends up a Jet, or slides down to the Pats, Ravens, or Bengals?

Keith Kidd: Things change every day, but he is a guy who is supposedly sliding down the board, based on this character issue. I don't buy into it. I think he's one of the most talented players in the draft. This is that player that could slide a bit that will start forcing trade movement in the first round.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bobby (Toledo, OH): NFL is known as a copy-cat league, are GM's staring to try and copy-cat Ted Thompson in GB?

Keith Kidd: Great question, however the team that they should try to copy would be the Patriots or Colts (or what the Giants did a year ago, as these teams have won world championships). Even though the Chargers have'nt won a Championship they have done a great job!!!! Ted Thompson has done a great job in GB. This team will be fun to watch as they adjust to life without Brett Favre

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CC (Atlanta): You know it's the offseason when Falcons fans have something to get excited about. I refuse to believe the Falcons will take Ryan @ 3. How many of the 2nd tier (Brohm, Flacco, Henne) Qbs will available when our #34 pick rolls around?

Keith Kidd: If they decide to draft Ryan at 3, I think teams will start coming up to take these other QBs in the later part of round 1. I think teams will have to trade up to take the QB (BLT, CAR, MIA, NYJ). When you're on the clock, sometimes, you need to simply take the best player available instead of need especially at QB. I have heard that the QBs have started to get hot again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris (Ashland, Ore): People say that Denver wants to trade down from 12. I say "duh!" Can you see anyone wanting to trade UP to twelve? Is there a prospect likely to entice anyone to make that move that Denver wouldn't take themselves?

Keith Kidd: Denver's in a perfect position to go up or down the board. What's going to be interesting is the reduced time teams have on the clock, so there will have to be deals in place prior to teams getting on the clock. The Broncos have nine picks, so they have some working room. But then again, I don't know what's going on in Denver.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
George (NY): Could DL really go 4 out of top 5 picks?

Keith Kidd: I see it more as two out of the first five. Possibly three, depending on Vernon Gholston. But I really think it's going to be interesting, because I do think Matt Ryan goes somewhere in the top five picks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Josh (NYC): Keith which side of the ball do you see the Jets working with the 6th pick?

Keith Kidd: Offense. They need more explosive playmakers. How could you pass on a guy like McFadden, if he's there?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b.h (VA): what should dallas concentrate on in the draft?

Keith Kidd: Corner, receiver, and running back.

Keith Kidd: Can you imagine if Jerry Jones was able to put a deal together to get Chad Johnson out of Cincinnati? How explosive would that be? The question is, if you're Marvin Lewis and the Cowboys offer you a No. 1, would you do it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anthony (NYC): Kidder not to shift away from the draft, but could you tell me what up with OT-Shane Olivea. He did block for this years leading rusher, are the tackles in this years draft better than him?

Keith Kidd: It's NOT a mystery to me, because he didn't perform anywhere to the level I thought he would. It's affecting his ability to get a deal. It could be a money issue. He could sign with a team on a 1-year deal.

Keith Kidd: Great chatting with SportsNation. I'll see you guys from Bristol on Friday. Obviously we'll be on with the guys from Scouts Inc. throughout the weekend. Have a Great Day!
