Re: Mayock & Billick explain how the wildcat got stuffed

About shutting down the MIA running game...

We opened the second half by stuffing Ricky for a 1 yard loss. That put MIA in more of a passing situation. He threw an incomplete pass on 2 and 11, then the pick 6 to Sharper making it 17-24.

Now they're in a 1 TD game with us having momentum.

On the next series, I think Sporano panicked a little. He passed on first down and we sacked Henne for a 7 yard loss. They almost have to pass on the next two downs. They go to their weakness and it lets them down again. 3 and out

Next the MIA CB makes a spectacular INT by ripping the ball away from Colston.

MIA dodged a bullet and come out running on their next possession, we hold them to 3 runs and a punt.

Next we fumble on our own 15 yard line, still hold them to 3 downs and a FG. They ran on first and second (WC) and pick up a net of -1 yard. Henne is forced to pass, their receivers let them down.

Even though they got the FG to go up 10 points halfway through the 3rd quarter, this was the most important drive of the game for the Saints, IMO. On two consecutive drives, the saints D stuffed MIA's running game, simultaneously killing any momentum they got off the back-to-back turnovers AND Sporano's confidence in his run game down the stretch. With a ten point lead, the best running attack in the NFL ran the ball one more time from this point until the garbage time drive after Porter's pick 6 iced it.

Those were some brilliant halftime adjustments from Williams and some inspired play from the Saints D. Give all the credit you want to Drew for being a leader and all that, but when it came to making a difference on the field, all the credit goes to the D in this one.

What you really have to look at is that for most of the game Saints had 8 men in the box. Harper came up majority of the time and the OC from Miami, Henning is up top in the booth looking down on this which tells any OC to throw the ball. The difference was Miami doesn't have any good dependable receivers and we did get good penatration not allowing Henne much time. If Ginn and company could hold on to the ball, this game might have turned out differently.

Bad play calls by sporano what you'd expect from a First or second year coach, whichever. They couldn't seem to call the right plays when they were Under pressure.

Saint"s did what they needed to do in the second half. Force the ball to be in Henne's hands and let him make some mistakes which he did. He had to unload early due to the pressure and could not keep pace with Bree's. Game Over

After the Saints showed the league how to defend it, the Wildcat may fade away.

Re: Mayock & Billick explain how the wildcat got stuffed

I called it in a thread last week. Greg Williams knows what he is doing. You cheat up the safties and your CB's play inside so they aren't easily blocked by the WR or QB and you can also blitz the CB in case its a sweep. It really isn't rocket science but I haven't seen any other NFL teams D get out of a their base D and purposely try and stop it until last week.

Saints win a Super Bowl and Brees is in the Hall of Fame. We are running out of time, I hope it is this year before Brees gets injured.

Slow down some...We are well into our window of opportunity but there is plenty of time. Drew is still relatively young and should have several more years ahead of him. HOF I firmly believe that we were built to be a winning franchise. We have a great foundation, we are strong from the inside (our core) and we should be formidable for years to come. We are built to be as good or better than the other dynastys. Our FO is smart, Benson is spending his money freely and the coaches are the best in the league.
