8-0 for the first time!

8-0 for the first time in our 43 year history.. what a good game tonight.. some offensive trouble with colston dropping passes. i hope his wrist is not injured again cause i feel that might be the reason for the drops.. two thumbs up for meachem with 5 catches and 98 yards and that amazing touchdown. didn't see much actions from pierre and mike tonight.. but im sure they will bounce back.. drew still ripped up the # 1 pass defense with 300+ yards. will smith was beast tonight.. he really has been doing good im liking his strive to play.. on the other hand i think grant needs to step up. idk if you guys saw but there was a play grant could of broke off the RT and get delhomme for a sack but it seemed like he just stood there. i hope Greer is ok and hoping its not a big injury. Bushrod did a good job containing peppers i give credit for that. though the OL did give up a sack and fumble and a deflection. the big question is.. do you think pressley did a good job? Geaux Saints.

Total team effort....again. These guys just find a way to win and grind it out.

Thank the schedule gods for Stl and Tampa. I sure hope Ellis comes back for NE.

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

Not impressed at all! Just as UGLY as last week...and the week before. We are managing to win but not playing good football. Our defense got exposed against the run and have been getting pounded ever since - that's not a good thing going forward. Our tackling is horrible...absolutely horrible. Our outside run press was as bad as the inside gap control. We finally got to Delomme at the end of the game and still let Smith get behind EVERYBODY late-down the stretch.
Thank you Carol's Panties for not wanting it as bad as we did.
It looked more like Carolina lost the game as aposed to us winning it.
At the end of the day, I'll take it, along with any other ugly win.
I just don't want to get used to winning ugly.

I think managing to win in the face of adversity is the mark of a CHAMPION! Maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen so many Champion teams winning BARELY in the face of every team gunning for them!

Another character win against a divisional opponent that has owned our lunch money. I'll take it anytime as will I take an 8-0 start. Thank you Saints.

i know what you mean man. it was an ugly game but thats what you'd expect from a divisional game. well thats how i see it. the run was something that screwed but but we are missing some key players such as sed and fujita. and plus we have marvin mitchell playing lol.. not a good idea. our tackling hasn't been great mostly due to the players working on trying to strip it as to wrapping up then stripping as stated in the atlanta game. our outside run and inside gap press wasn't not all great i mostly see that because it seems like some people forget or dont know their assignments. i wouldnt say we got to delhomme at the end because will smith did have some outstanding plays i beleive in the third and 2nd quarter, excuse if im wrong but thats what i could recall. i get oyur point as to accepting it but not wanting to get used to ugly wins. our coaches are really good at fixing mistakes and i beleive we will have more good wins. i can feel your frustrations towards how are defense was playing and how ugly our win was. but a wins a win lets jsut enjoy our new franchise record. WHO DAT

I don't think you are wrong.
This was a "monkey of our backs" game knowing the Panthers have been wining in the Dome for so long.

It's really amazing, the accomplishments this year...

First time 8-0
First time they win after the bye.
First time they beat the Panthers in the Dome since 2001!

... all the injuries they have: Brown, Moore, Evans, Ellis, Clancy, Fujita...
... all the TOs in the past 3 games... all the 14+ point holes in the past 2 games.

... it is just amazing...

Agreed, The fact that they were able to make adjustments, come back from 14 down, not allow a touchdown in the second half, is the mark of a champion. The right adjustments will be made, we get back some of the key players on defense. Geaux Saints, Love them WHO DATS!!

on another note, any news on Greer and what happened to him tonight?

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

Don't want to get used to "winning ugly!!!!!!???????" Ah how winning will spoil you. I remember when all we wanted was to be competitive! This is the Saints, Let the Falcons and QB Dick Shiner, yes Dick Shiner beat them 56-7, the first team to get beat by Tampa Bay, give Walter Payton he NFL rushing title, letting Joe Montana and SF come back from being down 35-7, had the Cowboys down 28-0 only to get beat, the first team to get "Big Benned" and so on and so on.

Ask Miami, Atlanta and Carolina how it feels to "Lose Pretty".

This is the first Saints "TEAM" we have ever seen.

A win is a win is a win.

We shouldn't be too proud of an 8-0 record. Last year the Titans started off 7-0 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. We haven't been looking very good the last few games....successful yes, but not very good. The defense has struggled at times, while the turnovers and dropped balls could potentially cost us a game.. I'll take it for what it is..a very ugly win with some luck along the way.

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

I will take the win, for what it was, U-G-L-Y. The defense looks terrible. They stepped up when they needed it, but missed tackle, after missed tackle, got really old really fast. I don't know what they need to do, but with Clancy, Ellis, and Fujita out, it's time to make a move here. Garrett Hartley is taking up a roster spot, that can be used elsewhere. Especially on the defensive side of the ball!

vpheughan 11-08-2009 08:02 PM

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

Yes, it's much better to play good, not be lucky and ultimately lose the game. (Again, Miami, Atlanta and Carolina)Then you can sit around and "Coulda, woulda shoulda" all day.

The Saints are 8-0!!!!! 8-0!!!!!! and you have to look for things to complain about??????

Maybe the bubble bursts and maybe it doens't. Either way, enjoy the ride. As Seals and Crofts once said, "We may never pass this way again."

First of all, "pride" is something you feel when you accomplish something.
I have not accomplished absolutely anything in the 8-0 start, and none of the players are my kids that I know of...

Second, the Titans really started 10-0 and did lose in the playoffs.
The Colts started 13-0 and lost in the playoffs as well.
Of the last 10 teams who started at least 8-0, they are the only 2 teams not make the SB.

And I don't know how long have you been a Saints fan, but remember all the lucky bounces and calls the Whiners got when they ruled the 1980's; remember all the calls/lucky bounces the Cowboys got during the 90's, or the Pats this decade. They won ugly along the way of their SB years.

Well said. I have been a Saints fan since day one. And I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly!! And I have seen every one of those calls/lucky bounces!! So I say, call it what you want. I'll take it every time. It's our turn man. So just enjoy the ride. We played a divisional foe that is a good football team, and won. Ugly? I'll take it.

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

An U-G-L-Y win is still a win, grant it. I am more concerned about hanging our hopes on UGLY. It CAN'T last...playoffs are one-and-done when you don't cross T's and dot I's - and that's definitely NOT how I want things to end. I can swallow bigger, stronger, faster; just can't stomach poor technigue, mental mistakes, and missed assignments: especially at this level. My concerns are the same as at the front of the season. Ladies and Gentlemen, even at an 8-0 mark...we are NOT there yet! I'm afraid to look at the 3rd down stops: 3rd-and-12, 3rd-and-7, 3rd-and-17...damn!

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

Love 8-0...BUT...we still need the games that we're supposed to win. That'll separate us from Saints teams of the past. With no major injuries, I think the team philosophy will carry us into the playoffs. Actually, our team is really deep throughout the lineup, and I think we can recover from injuries (they have already). Remember, though...we ain't in the playoffs yet. We have got to win those games ahead of us.

There just the BEST SAINTS TEAM EVER.

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

Thoughts on the recent games:

1. The run defense has actually been pretty decent against 4 of the top rushing teams in the NFL. There have been plenty of missed tackles, but those running backs are known for being hard to tackle. It happens. I think the Saints' run D is still top ten. Don't forget Carolina put up 270 yards against the league's top rushing defense at the time (AZ).

2. The pass protection for Brees has been horrible early in the last few games. It gets better as the game goes on. I don't know if it's Brees himself or the line at fault for the slow starts, but it's nice that they have been able to recover before halftime each week.

3. Reggie Bush played the way we want him to play, especially against Carolina. He ran forward instead of dancing, he hit some people, he caught every ball thrown to him (including some spectacular grabs). The only thing he didn't do was break a big play, but those will come if he keeps earning his touches like he did Sunday.

4. How about Meachem and Henderson developing into complete receivers? I think a lot of us had our doubts but they are both for real.

5. No long kickoff or punt returns given up against Carolina! Nice to see.

Everyone played their best, that is why they cameback against a good team.

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

I'm not gonna badmouth the play at all. I praise it. We played a hard fought emotional game on MNF agains t the Falcons, won it, had a short week and played the Panthers...ALWAYS a tough game. Perfect recipe for a letdown game...a recipe we would have cooked and eaten in the past. But we won.
Every team out there is gunning for us. We're getting everybodies best game and most intricate gameplans. We have been figuring them out in the first half... making adjustments at half time...and winning in the second half. How can anyone have a problem with that?!?!? Saints fans are so accustomed to *****ing about the team when we lose...quit looking for reasons to ***** when we win.

Food teams find a way to win games like this and that is just a simple truth we are faced with. Take the win and get ready for the Rams

PS we need to add some beef to this DL.

Great post...and you are definitely not wrong. I think Tom Brady, for example, carries a rabbit foot. They made it to the SB one year after a fumble was called an incomplete pass, and on another occasion in a different year, he threw a pass on a critical 4th down play that was intercepted only to have the returner fumble it to give the Pats a fresh set of downs to clear the way for yet another lucky win and playoff appearance.

FrenzyFan 11-09-2009 08:05 AM

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

No matter how much everyone appreciates coming out the other end of a game with a "W", it's crazy talk to not recognize that our play has been ugly and undisciplined. I may be "spoiled" but the regular season is just about getting into the playoffs to me. The only game that matter in the regular season relate directly to that proposition.

Each individual playoff game matters, and you don't win many playing the way we've been playing. We have to get our play cleaned up. We can win it all if we play disciplined football. We're not doing right now, and really haven't been for a good while - it all started in Buffalo. Considering what we're capable of, we should be winning with a comfortable margin and in control of the game throughout. Instead we're scrabbling, scratching and clawing down to the last second.

I'm happy about being 8-0. That doesn't mean I can't see what's right in front of me.

Budsdrinker 11-09-2009 08:18 AM

Re: 8-0 for the first time!

There is no such thing as a Saints ugly win! They are all a thing of beauty to me. One thing to keep in mind is that this is the first year for the defense under Gregg Williams. It's going to take a while for the players to adapt to his schemes compared to what they were doing under Gibbs. The thing that needs to be drilled into their heads is the first person to reach the ball carrier needs to wrap him up and let the second person go for the strip. I like the fact that we try to strip the ball all the time but someone has to wrap him up first.
