Trap game? Trap this!

The 8 and 0 New Orleans Saints travel to St. Louis this Sunday to battle the 1 and 7 Rams. Given the disparity of the records between the two teams, this one has all the makings for a "trap game" right?

"I think that's an abused term," Saints offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb said.

What exactly is a "trap game?" It's a phrase or term that is carelessly tossed about by sports hosts and fans from time to time when their team has a bottom feeder or an inferior opponent on the schedule with a bigger game looming down the road. The phrase has been kicked around several times this season leading up to games for the Saints.

It was mentioned after the Black and Gold beat down the Philadelphia Eagles 48 to 22 and were headed to Buffalo the following week to take on the Bills. Some fans and experts alike felt like the big win over Philly would cause the Saints to look past the Bills and toward the Jets. Anybody remember the score of that game? I'll oblige... Saints 27 - Bills 7.

"Trap game" was cautioned again after the Saints blasted the New York Giants 48 to 27 in week 5, on their way to Miami in week 6, with Atlanta looming on Monday Night Football. The experts and fans were almost right. Early in that game it looked like the Black and Gold may have forgotten to bring their game to Miami. The Saints needed a thrilling come from behind second half effort to topple the Dolphins 46 to 34.

"I've heard that term (trap game) used several times this season involving our games, it doesn't make sense. The bottom line is you have to show up each and every Sunday. This is the NFL," Stinchcomb noted.

Are we catching onto the theme here?

Is there such a thing as a "trap game?" Stinchcomb doesn't think so. "You can't look past anybody, there's no such thing as a bye week or a gimme." Despite that declaration "trap game" has reared its ugly head again this week as the Saints get ready for this Sunday's game against St. Louis.

"It's not like, we're back in high school or college where one team is far superior then the next," Stinchcomb explained.

The Saints are 8 and 0, and the big reason they are off to the fastest start in franchise history is because they respect their opponent and are focused on "one game at a time." They don't look back and don't look past the next game on the schedule.

"In the NFL you have to show up every week, and you're going to play big games, and they're going to be followed up by a whole new team the following week, we're not looking past these guys" said Stinchcomb.

Furthermore, it would make the Rams season to be the first team to hand the Saints a loss.

"I think when you are playing good football, you get your opponents' best shot, and they understand what they have to do to win, and what they have to do to get ready to play. I think that's pretty common," Coach Sean Payton offered.

The Rams are coming off their bye week, and with an extra week to prepare. Over the last three seasons, teams coming off their bye week won 62% of the time in the NFL.

"This game is going to present a number of challenges for us," Payton said. He explained that parity is another reason the Saints can't and won't look past the struggling Rams. "There's not a lot of difference between the teams that are well above .500 or below .500 with their record. If you're not ready to play a game, then you can get beat."

The Saints are battle tested, they have been in this situation before; playing a terrible team riding a big winning streak. In 2007, the 0 and 8 St. Louis Rams came into the Superdome in New Orleans and beat the Saints soundly 37 to 29. At the time the Saints were 4 and 4 and winners of four straight games. Lesson Learned?

"I promise you we are not looking past these guys," said running back Pierre Thomas.

Please, spare me of the "trap game" talk for the rest of this season.

I have to agree with QBREES9, I have seen the term tossed around more this season than ever before. When I first read the expression I thought that it sounded a little foolish to use unless the team you played had almost no chance to beat you. We have been close to losing the last few games even though we've been playing against inferior competition...hmmmm maybe they were almost traps.

Surrendering nearly 400 yards a game, including 238.6 yards through the air, does not bode well for St. Louis' chances of a major upset Sunday.

If we don't score 21 in the first half, we've been trapped...
