Death of Drew Brees' mother ruled a suicide

In August, the mother of Saints quarterback Drew Brees died suddenly.

Making the tragic and untimely death of 59-year-old Mina Brees, an Austin, Texas lawyer, even more upsetting was that Drew Brees and his mother had been estranged for several years.

Now, reports have emerged that Mina Brees' death has been ruled a suicide.

In the days before her passing, Mrs. Brees had been involved in a controversy regarding alleged efforts to compel Houston-area restaurants to pay $20,000 or more to retain the right to use their current business names.

We were reluctant at first to mention this latest development, out of respect to the Brees family. But given Drew Brees' high profile and the well-documented relationship between Brees and his mother, we concluded that the item -- reported in the Austin American-Statesman -- is newsworthy, and we again extend our condolences to the Brees family at what surely has been a very difficult several months for them. We hope that they will be able to find closure and peace in the coming days.

tragic in all regards. Really hope Drew and his family get through this on positive note, if possible.

Not to sound cold or unfeeling, but Drew and his mother didn't get along. Now I'm sure that it was upsetting for him, but I can't see where he had an emotional attachment to her and it shouldn't affect his family who knew her even less than Drew did. I do feel for the man...it was still his mother.

Death of New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' mother ruled suicide - ESPN

Sad....

Associated Press
GRANBY, Colo. -- The death of the mother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been ruled a suicide.

Brees
Mina Brees, an attorney from Austin, Texas, died Aug. 7 while visiting Colorado. Grand County coroner Brenda Bock concluded this week that the 59-year-old Brees died of a prescription drug overdose and ruled the death a suicide.

Bock said Brees died while staying at the home of a friend in Granby near Rocky Mountain National Park.

It took longer than three months for autopsy results to be released, but Bock said that's typical for cases involving toxicology tests.

The Austin American Statesman reported that three days before Brees died, the Texas attorney general's office subpoenaed her business records.

She had allegedly sent letters to some restaurants in Austin and Houston stating that they had lost their rights to use their names to a company she represented, Chicksports, but they could win the rights back by paying up to $25,000. She was also the president of Chicksports but that wasn't mentioned in the letter.

Relations between Drew Brees and his mother were strained at times and the quarterback asked her to stop using his picture in TV commercials touting her candidacy for a Texas appeals court seat in 2006.

Mina Brees said she had not anticipated upsetting her son and sent out replacement commercials omitting mention of him.

At the time, Drew Brees called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent," saying it crumbled six years earlier when he refused to hire her as his agent.

Austin attorney Marty Akins, the brother of Mina Brees, declined comment late Friday.

Sad for Him. The good thing is he is holding up well. In all our tragedies you have to accept things for what they are to be able to let go. You never forget but your try and remember the good things about people who have passed. Life is hard for most, treat people well and do your best because we all have that one thing in common mortality.
