Just Reported: Chris McAlister a Saint!!
 

The New Orleans Saints, apparently concerned that injuries to starting cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer could linger, brought in some insurance Tuesday night.

ESPN’s John Clayton reports the Saints have signed veteran cornerback Chris McAllister.

Porter has a sprained MCL and could miss several weeks and Greer missed Sunday’s game against St. Louis. The Saints have decent depth at cornerback with veteran Randall Gay and rookie Malcolm Jenkins.

But McAllister, a 10-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler, could step right into the mix as one of the top three corners with Gay and Jenkins if Greer and Porter remain out. McAllister, 32, has been out of the league since the Ravens released him in February.

The undefeated Saints already have had good luck in bringing in one veteran defensive back. They signed safety Darren Sharper, 33, as a free agent and he’s been an instant leader and one of the league’s most productive defensive players.

Agreed. I am sure they will ease him along slowly but it's nice to add veteran depth. McAllister knows how to play man so he will fit many of our schemes by default.

I had a feeling that they would bring someone in. Boy hope they strike gold twice in bringing in an "experienced" defensive back, begs one question though, if he had anything left in the tank then why was he available?

The Ravens today released cornerback Chris McAlister, a player that fell out of favor with new coach John Harbaugh and ended the season on IR after starting the first five games of the season. The 10-year veteran was also a three-time Pro Bowler, and was also a part of the Ravens Super Bowl winning team in 2001.

The 31-year-old ranks third on the Ravens’ career list with 26 interceptions and scored seven touchdowns for Baltimore—including a 107-yard return of a missed field goal. McAllister was put on IR on November 11th due to a right knee injury, but by then, there were plenty of stories about his issues with coach Harbaugh, and how he was in the coaches doghouse.

McAlister finished the season with three interceptions and 19 tackles. He was due to make $8 million this year. “We want to thank Chris for all he did for the Ravens in the past 10 years,” general manager Ozzie Newsome said. “He was a major contributor to many big wins, including the Super Bowl.”

McCalister was a stud when he was with the Ravens pre-HC Harbaugh.
This signing has GW written all over it.
Dude isn't that old. If he can get some of the Raven studliness back for 5-6 games until Porter comes back, that'll do it.

I think he was about to end up on team anyway sooner or later glad to see we are making moves on some of these guys who we could use instead of just sailing along with what we got.

I don't know but my pick would have been MM. I hope we didn't go with CM because on a money issue but hey its a buisness.

I'm just glad that we got some depth at corner. He should be a good addition to our secondary. He was a pretty good cover corner and I'm hoping he'll be able to pick up GW's system pretty quickly. I think Jenkins would get the majority of the playing time.

i would say something that flies cuz sharper definitly doesnt walk and he definitly doesnt have little gimpy arms

Can't remember where I saw this, but it was said that he was close to signing with the Raiders earlier this season, but he didn't want to come back until he knew he was 100% recovered from knee surgery at the end of last year. Now he's ready, and apparently the Saints feel he's ready, too. I agree with SmashMouth here. He signed with not just a contender, but an undefeated team. Personally, I hope this works out. The guy was a beast of a corner before, and anywhere close to that would be an improvement over Gay, Torrence, or moving Young back to corner.

Yeah...prefer to leave Young at safety...if all is well health-wise, this is a pretty solid pickup...

Young was on wwl yesterday and he said that there wasn't any talks of him moving back to corner but he did say whatever the team asked him to play he would play it.

Just bc McAllister hasn't signed doesn't mean he can't still play. How many unsigned gems has this organization unearthed over the past three seasons??

How well will McAllister be ingrained into the system by the weekend? Is he going to be in pads? Are they holding him out until the Patsies' game in two weeks?

Sharper instantly upgrades the secondary. No need to rush McAllister into action vs the Bucs. He may see a handful of plays in the 4th but he has 11 days to prepare for NE.

McAllister has had some knee problems over the past few years, but apparently he was waiting to sign until he felt 100% from his knee surgery. I like the signing personally. Low risk, high reward. I don't think he's going to return to his 2003 All-Pro form, but he's not that old and I still think he can make a difference. He had 3 interceptions in just 6 games last year before getting hurt.
