How the Saints Win on Sunday is More Important Than if They Win

Should the Saints lose Sunday make no mistake: They will officially be stuck in a funk. The Buccaneers are currently 1-8, and while they've played much better football of late, they are clearly in rebuilding mode while the Saints are eyeing a top NFC seed in the playoffs. There would need to be nothing short of a disastrous performance for the Saints to lose or a performance not too different from the performance they put out last weekend at St. Louis. As evidenced by the Saints play of late, it's not impossible they'll lose this game. I've learned my lesson from last week when St. Louis played what I thought was an excellent game and almost stole one from the Saints at the buzzer. Regardless of how bad the other team is, if the Saints don't play well they won't be given the game. They need to come out this week and stop horsing around with these weaker opponents.

Any given Sunday.... right?

Do I think it would ruin our season? No, because we're still in excellent shape to win the division. Would it hurt our ego? Probably.

If anything, I believe a loss would be motivational. I think GW calls those types of losses a life lesson.

There are no style points in the NFL. This isn't figure skating. A win is a win and they are all beautiful.

I don't care if the Saints win on a Hail Mary. In fact I might prefer it. Blowouts are boring. Blowouts are for college fans who desperately need the affirmation of beating the hell out of schoolgirls every Saturday.

I want a fight to the finish. The NFL is the gladiator ring, desperate, bloody and uncertain. I want two teams locked in a bitter knife fight, slashing and stabbing, loops of intestines dripping to the floor.

I want the victor, grime on his face, to deliver the death blow to an opponent he respects for the fight in his heart.

It's important to win this game because it's a conference game.

Everyone wants to see consistency with some improvement every week. The saints have slipped some in the past 3 games. If they jump out to an early 10-14 point lead, it is over for the Bucs. If they fool around with them and turn the ball over, it will be a long close game that they can lose.
