As chilling as Tuesday's developments were, things would get worse for New England if Milloy signs with Buffalo -- a move that could tip the balance of power in the highly competitive AFC East toward the Bills. A Bills official confirmed the team's interest in Milloy on Tuesday, and said Buffalo was ready to immediately pursue a contract with him as soon as his name showed up on the NFL's daily transaction wire.

New Orleans and Washington are the other two teams seriously pursuing Milloy, but the Bills are believed to have the inside track. A league source said Milloy and his agent, Carl Poston, planned to lay out the options Tuesday night, before reaching a decision Wednesday morning.

Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe, Milloy's former Patriots teammate, is leading the cheers for Milloy in Buffalo. But Milloy also spoke a number of times Tuesday with Jones, the Saints safety who was his friend and fellow secondary mate in New England the past five years. Milloy is seeking a contract in the $4 million per year range, and while it's unclear if he'll reach that figure, both the Bills and Saints seem wary that Washington owner Daniel Snyder might elevate Milloy's price tag to a range they would deem too costly

As good of a thought as it would be to have Jones/Milloy as our safeties... what\'s going on with Edwards/Fuamatu-Ma\'afala/Smith for a back up RB. If we do happen to sign Milloy, would our best option be to resign Carter (salary cap issues)?

If the Saints are serious. I think they will find a way to do both. Maybe by restructuring someones contract. Who knows. But I do believe they will get it done.

I dont think signing Carter will be a problem. I think they\'re waiting to see what happens with Milloy before they sign a RB. If they get Milloy then they will have to go with Carter. If they dont then they will be able to go after Robert Edwards with a longer deal.

Pats didn\'t shop Law

by Michael Felger
Wednesday, September 3, 2003

While Ty Law\'s contract is certainly a concern to the Patriots in the same way Lawyer Milloy\'s was, the Pats did not offer up Law in trade talks this offseason, contrary to reports.

``Did not and are not,\'\' said a team spokesman last night, relaying word from coach Bill Belichick.

A CNN/SI story earlier in the day said the Pats had offered Law around the league in an attempt to avoid paying him $4.9 million this season and $5.6 million next year.

Meanwhile, several teams were in the running for Milloy\'s services last night. One source close to the situation said the Redskins were a favorite, but word out of Washington last night was that Buffalo was the leader in the clubhouse. Bills GM Tom Donohoe said, ``We\'d sign him right now and play him Sunday.\'\' Minnesota and the Jets showed early interest, but dropped out. Also interested was New Orleans, where Milloy\'s former teammate, Tebucky Jones, plays. Milloy reportedly telephoned Jones several times yesterday.

Milloy\'s agent, Carl Poston, told a Houston TV station he hoped to have his client with a new team by today.

Milloy had fretted about his contract situation all offseason, and at a minicamp in June he talked openly about the need to be ready to move on. Milloy had further inkling something might happen this week and finally received the news at Gillette Stadium yesterday morning. He left soon after.

As for the timing of the release, one key factor was a rule involving veterans with more than four years of experience. Once ``vested veterans\'\' appear on a team\'s roster in Week 1 of the season, their base salaries must be paid in full.

Milloy\'s 2003 base salary was $4.4 million, and if he had played against the Bills he would have gotten that sum, and the Pats would have lost leverage in negotiations. The Pats were determined not to pay Milloy the salary, which made him the highest paid safety in the NFL.

The belief in Foxboro was that a restructured contract would get done prior to this week, and Belichick went about business throughout training camp and preseason under that assumption. Milloy, who participated fully in the team\'s offseason conditioning program, took a full turn with the first team all training camp and started all four preseason games.

``Lawyer did not at all look like a player who was looking to get out of here,\'\' said one team source. ``He gave every indication he wanted to be here.\'\'

Again , just did the tighten up.

Expect difficult contract negotiations:

Carl Poston is the agent for both Lawyer Milloy. A reputation as a hard headed agent that will not sign his clients for anything less than what \"he\" thinks they should get. There seems to be no lee-way with this agent.

Carl Poston has a firm in Houston called \"Professional Sports Planning\". Carl has a number of other players in his \"stable\", some are Lavar Arrington, Redskins, Charles Woodson, Raiders and Orlando Pace, Rams.

Bills on hold with Lawyer Milloy

By Leo Roth
Staff writer

(September 3, 2003) — The Buffalo Bills have made a contract offer to safety Lawyer Milloy, who was cut Tuesday in a salary cap move by the New England Patriots, but Bills President Tom Donahoe says he needs a decision by today so the team can focus on Sunday’s opener against the Patriots.

The Bills, Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints are considered the top contenders for Milloy’s services. The Redskins have reportedly offered a two-year contract worth $5 million a year, while the Saints reportedly offered a three-year deal for an undisclosed sum.

“ We’re kind of in a holding pattern on this, Donahoe said. “ But we’ve been told we’re one of the teams that Lawyer is seriously looking at.

Donahoe added that he doesn’t think money will be the sole determining factor for Milloy, a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Gator, if you think a four-time Pro Bowler still in his prime does nothing to improve our defense other than offer depth then I don\'t think that you\'d be happy even if the NFC defensive Pro Bowlers from last season all agreed to play for the Saints for $10 a year.

IF the Saints sign Milloy, I believe that he would be the best player on defense come Sunday - and I doubt that would change all year.
