Pierre Thomas talks about his injury and Saints playoffs

Pierre Thomas had just burst through a hole for a 26-yard gain against Tampa Bay when he felt the pain. A linebacker landed on him and left him with three cracked ribs.

Whether it was coincidence or not, the Saints have not been the same since then. Thomas played one more down before leaving the game for good. New Orleans blew a 17-0 lead in his absence, losing 20-17 in overtime.

Will Thomas be ready when the Saints open the playoffs on Jan. 16? He talked to reporters in the locker room on Monday and made his own prognosis.

Was it frustrating to get this rib injury at the end of the year?

“I was never healthy throughout the whole season. I don’t know any player who can threw an entire season and not get dinged up. You have to have the mindset that I can’t worry about this injury.”

Are you disappointed you lost the team rushing lead (to Mike Bell in average yards per game) because you missed the last game-and-a-half?

“I didn’t think I was going to be the top rusher on the team. That wasn’t my mindset or motivation. My whole motivation is to go out here and try to get a win each game. What do I have to do to help my team? That’s what I want. I really wanted to go 16-0, but you can’t get everything you want, so you just have to work hard and learn from your mistakes.”

What will you do to get ready for the first playoff game?

“I heal, relax. Your body heals on its own, so I just have to sit back, can’t do too much movement. I don’t think it’s as severe as it was my rookie year. My rookie year you could see a big crack in them. These three you see partial cracks. Maybe one of them is almost fully and two of them are half-cracked. The two fully I had my rookie year I couldn’t do anything but sit down and relax. I’m moving around now. I haven’t gotten a chance to run yet. I’ve been on the bike and done some cardio work. I’ll probably start running in the next few days here.”

  • What is the normal recovery time?
  • How worried are you about the three-game losing streak?
  • Will you be close to 100 percent in two weeks?

We are no more injured than any other NFL squad at this time of the year and we have an extra week to heal. Whomever we face will have yet another week's worth of injuries to deal with.

disagree. most injury reports for the playoffs have pointed towards teams being more healthy than they have been in the reg season. Esp the Cowboys and Eagles.

It's funny how SP went with health over momentum and yet here we are.

.

They still have a game to play though. We could easily be the most healthy team come gametime.

Exactly. Minus Grant we should be the healthiest we have been since we were rolling over our competition. And I don't see Grant's loss as being that material.

On the other hand, Dallas still has their OT Columbo out, as well as S Pat Watkins. The Vikings have had Pat Williams, Visanthe Shiancoe and Antoine Winfield down recently. Arizona looks to be without Anquan Boldin and Antrel Rolle, while their kicker, Neil Rackers, has been battling groin issues. The Packers defense is very banged up with LB's Jeremy Thompson, Brandon Chillar, Nick Barnett, S Derrick Martin and defensive linemen Ryan Pickett, Mike Montgomery and Johnny Jolley all having health issues. Corners Trevor Ford and defensive standout Charles Woodson are also battling injuries of their own. Philly hasn't escaped the bug either with Brian Westbrook, Jeremy Maclin and Reggie Brown all at less than 100%.

Well Guido you sure seem to know your stuff. Glad to have you here sharing your info. I agree we won't limp into the playoffs like a lot of other teams. Not only that we should be well rested.

Hopefully those injuries to other teams workout to our advantage in the playoffs. Anybody agree?

Injuries, no momentum, HFA throughout, Drew Brees..... Guys, I am not disagreeing on the points being made, but I will say this. This team, did not bust their butts all year, to get to the play offs, just to come out flat, I guarantee you that. Here's another thought: Any team, that thinks they can win a superbowl, also needs to be a team, that believes they can play, and WIN, no matter who's field they are on. HFA is nice to have, but in recent years, alot of teams have gone on to win superbowls, never playing one home game. (and by the way, we have a better away record, than at home)

This team took a hit after the Dallas game, on their mindset. The letdown of the undefeated season has got to be flushed away, and the focus, and determination has to come back. If they get those things back in business, then there is not one team, in this league, that we cannot beat.

Forget the past, and look to the future. That's the best thing the team, and we as fans can do right now. Injuries happen, just like death, and taxes. You can either use them as excuses, or you can man up. That's just my opinion.
