New Orleans' unique relationship with the Saints

I was just reading this story from the NOLA site:
Fox will use its playoff pre-game show to tell America about the unique bond between New Orleans and its Saints | New Orleans Television - - NOLA.com

One of the quotes from thew story touches on this:

For the story, Glazer and a camera crew rode in Payton's car through the throng that met the team at the airport after a road win.
"I love the story of this team with the fans, what they've gone through, how they've walked the road together to get here, " Glazer said. "It's one of the cooler moments of my reporting career. I said to Sean, 'The rest of the country needs to see this. It's wild.'

I know that most people around the country don't realize how special this team is to the city. It was described it in a Boston newspaper as a "college atmosphere for a pro team" but that doesn't fully describe it.

I live in Houston now and there are Texans fans here but it isn't the same. They root for the team, follow the team like the team, but I have yet to meet somebody who really lives and dies and loves the team here.

For any of you guys that had to move, how different is it there with the local teams? When I was a kid I assumed all the teams had large parts of the city that went nuts for their team. I don't think it's like this anywhere else.

DAMN I WANT THE SAINTS TO WIN TODAY!!!

I didn't move because of the storms or anything, but up until June I had lived in Lake Charles, LA for two years. Of course it's still in LA, but I was only 27 miles from the LA/Texas border.

Lots of mixed fans for both Saints and Texans so it was kind of weird honestly. And we would have both Saints and Texans' games air every Sunday so it was just incredibly strange to see local coverage not be totally about the black and gold.

Most of the fans where I actually lived were devoted to the Saints, but those right there from Texas were hardcore Texan fans and it was just so strange seeing the mixture. Hell, there were even a great number of Cowboy fans in the area and would come into my city to work.

Never be scared though to show your devotion no matter where you are or who you're around. If you're a true fan then always fly your true colors.

New Orleans is a city where most people are born and die. You don't get a lot of people who moved here in their mid 20s to earn a career. Most Saints fans are born and raised. I know I've watched and listened to virtually every game these bozoes have played. My 16 year old daughter loves the Saints. She sees the passion created by family and friends.

I doubt a team that doesn't have the 40 year history could ever compete with that.

Wasn't born in NO & I probably wil not die their...

BUT - I have been a huge Saints fan since the late 70's. I have become amazingly pissed at them some times (I MEAN AMAZINGLY) but I eventually come down. My big hope is to actually get to the Superdome for a game (someday!!)

NICE! My hometown gets mentioned in the forum...Lake Chuck is weird because of it's proximity to Texas. At least it's not like Shreveport and their cowgirl fixation...

I remember when my mother, step-father and I moved to Colorado and the Denver Broncos first went to the Super Bowl in 1978. Broncomania was insane...I would imagine that what is going on down there is very similar to what I saw then. Orange was everywhere...and then there was me...the little kid wearing the Black and Gold. Saints who? Man, those were some BRUTAL years...

Agreed!!!:D How else can you explain people staying true to a team that has , in the past, broken their hearts year in and year out. My mother made me a Saints fan so that I never forgot where I came from...and living in Colorado, I am always pleased to see someone else sporting Saints gear. They are usually a Louisianan, as well (Where you from? I'm from Lake Charles and you? I'm from Slidell)...However, I always get a laugh when someone asks me if I am one of those "bandwagon fans"...I usually reply, "Sure...as long as that bandwagon started 40 years ago"
