New Orleans Saints sign defensive end Rob Ninkovich and safety Terrence Holt

Posted by Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune December 03, 2008 12:15PM

The Saints signed defensive end Rob Ninkovich and safety Terrence Holt to fill the roster spots that were vacated by the suspensions of Deuce McAllister and Will Smith.

Ninkovich, 24, began his career with the Saints as a fifth-round draft pick out of Purdue in 2006, but he only appeared in three games before he suffered a season-ending injury, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He then missed almost all of training camp in 2007 with a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and he was released before the first game of the season.

He was picked up by the Miami Dolphins, where he was bounced around between the active roster and the practice squad ever since. He has appeared in five games with the Dolphins, mostly on special teams.

The 6-2, 255-pounder is an athletic pass-rusher who also fits as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive system.

Holt, 28, has been a starter with both the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals in the past. He spent training camp this year with the Carolina Panthers before being released and was picked up briefly by the Chicago Bears. The 6-2, 204-pounder has 241 tackles and eight interceptions in his career.

Holt is the younger brother of St. Louis Rams receiver Torry Holt.

14 players on IR and 3 suspended. And that doesn't even include injured players like KK who are not on either list. Not even a full complement on the practice squad could have covered that.

I guess it's must be depressing for 31 other teams in the league at this time of year also. Look at the NFL weekly transaction sheet... teams makes moves daily year round.

we all know Rob and it is nice to see him back.

Holt is a FS!!!!!!! OK I maybe a bit desperate maybe. But he has put together more than one good year. At 6-2, 208, he should be a nice addition to kick coverage team.

Cardinals Release Terrence Holt
By Amberly Richardson
Cardinalinsider.com
Posted Feb 21, 2008

he Cardinals cut three players today, most notably starting safety Terrence Holt. Tackle Oliver Ross and defensive lineman Chris Cooper were also given their walking papers. Arizona will use its time at the NFL Combine to scout potential replacements.

As the fourth-highest paid safety in the league, Terrence Holt failed to live up to his paycheck last season after the Cardinals jumped on him in free agency. He finished the season without an interception or a sack and missed too many tackles in the open field.

Holt was set to receive a $1.5 million roster bonus in early March, but the Cardinals cut Holt with time to spare.

"The biggest reason for this today was the cap," Ken Whisenhunt said. "Going through the whole process of planning for free agency next week, we needed the cap space for our restricted free agents."

Oliver Ross spent the 2007 season on injured-reserve and was adequately replaced by Mike Gandy.

Chris Cooper played in 12 games for the Cardinals last year, collecting six tackles.

Scout.com: Cardinals Release Terrence Holt

Biography:
The Arizona Cardinals signed Safety Terrence Holt to a five-year contract on March 8, 2007. He was originally drafted in 2003 by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round.

2007

Holt started all 16 games his first year in red. He tacked on 69 tackles.

With Detroit

Holt had his best year in Detroit in 2006 when he posted 76 tackles and three interceptions. He appeared in all 16 games, with 15 starts. Holt's first three years with the Lions, he never broke out with more than 41 tackles in a season.

Personal

When the Cardinals put Holt in ink, he was reunited with his college teammate and roommate Adrian Wilson. Holt's younger brother, Torry Holt, plays for the NFC West rival St. Louis Rams

So Holt was the STARTING safety on a team that surrendered more passing TD than any other team in the league??

No bueno.
