Conservative Playcalling?

It felt like yesterday the Saints didn't want to take any risks and move the ball down field. Yes the Minnesota pass rushers are good, but still, its almost like the offense was not forcing the tempo like it usually attempts to do. Not sure why, I'm pretty certain we could have put up more yards and points but its like we didn't want to or were playing too conservative or something.

No doubt about it there were chances to really kill them but I understand the philosophy and with the Defense getting turnovers and crucial stops there wasn't a reason to change in SP's mind I guess. but let me say this

F**KING KILL THE DOUBLE REVERSE!!!! just rip that whole page out of the book.

I, also, felt like the playcalling was too conservative. But, I am not the coach, and somehow they pulled this one off. Here's hoping they have a great gameplan for the SB!

Re: Conservative Playcalling?

The play calling brought back memories of ChiTown 06'. Payton looked to be out-smarting himself sometimes. I didn't see much down the field stuff by design, until we were in 3rd and really long. Nothing to Colston and Henderson on the edges. Tell me how I can erase that double reverse out of my mind. It still tortures me. Payton has already proved to be ONE of the best offensive minds in the game. Somebody give him his prize so he can get back to the business of moving the football.

Re: Conservative Playcalling?

People say the Vikings "should" have won the game, and if they would have played in Minnesota they would have won. I'm gonna throw out a shoulda myself, if they Saints had the same gameplan they did last week against Arizona, they would have blown out the Vikings. The opened the game, looking to move the ball up field. They were having amazing success, and it didn't look like the Vikings would keep up. People could say that the Vikings defense got better, or made adjustments or whatever. Something changed in their playcalling. It's almost like the risky high tempo offense that was the reason they got to this game was removed and replaced by a more cautious, more ball security oriented team. I guess a win is a win though. People can say what they want, but we still won. That's all that matters. I just felt like all the hoopla could have been avoided if they would have kept up the tempo.

I agree . I wouldn't say kill it though, but its ran at times where it is useless.

Re: Conservative Playcalling?

Admittedly, there were a lot of times in the game that we got outcoached - Saints couldn't sustain drives, and we let Berrian and Shiancoe go wild. Childress and Frazier had it together, best game they coached all year.

But overall I still think we have better coaches than the Vikes. I think we'll make lots of corrections in the next 2 weeks.

Re: Conservative Playcalling?

We can't win the SB with that kind of offense. Payton and Brees have to be aggressive and take some chances. That's what got them into this position in the first place. They almost blew it yesterday and got bailed out by the defensive turnovers and great ST play (minus the Reggie muff on the PR). Part of the problem yesterday was that Minn felt they could contain our run game with their front 7, which they pretty much did, allowing them to keep both safeties back in shell coverage. This, compounded with Shockey's inability to run pass routes due to his knee, meant that both Colston and Devery could be double covered. We had to use max protect, which limited the number of receivers we could send out on routes. Nevertheless, Payton should have been passing on those third and shorts--where were the screens to the backs and wide receivers? And the double reverse simply killed one drive. He's got to call smarter game. It should help that we will be able to run better against Indy, making the play-action game more effective. And, hopefully, Shockey will be recovered enough to be effective in the passing game.
