Just as the Indianapolis Colts say they will extend quarterback Peyton Manning's contract this offseason, the New Orleans Saints will do the same for their quarterback, Drew Brees, according to sources close to the situation.


The Saints intend to redo Brees' deal later this year to bring his salary more in line with the game's top quarterbacks. This season Brees was the 17th-highest paid quarterback in the league, yet he finished second in the league in MVP voting and led New Orleans to the first Super Bowl in franchise history.

New Orleans considered extending Brees' contract last offseason, but opted to wait another year. Now that it has, the price only has risen with Brees performing the way he has. Should the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV, Brees practically would be able to name his price.

Discussions on a new deal have yet to begin, but they will this offseason. A contract is expected to be wrapped up by the time the Saints report to training camp if not during it, but nobody around the league expects Brees to play the 2010 season under the six-year, $60 million contract that he signed in March 2006.

Interestingly, agent Tom Condon represents both Super Bowl quarterbacks, Brees and Manning. Condon will have a large influence in an offseason that will re-establish top quarterback salaries. Last offseason, the Giants signed quarterback Eli Manning to the richest contract in NFL history, and San Diego signed quarterback Philip Rivers to a slightly smaller deal.

Now, Brees and Manning are expected to get new contracts, and New England also plans to discuss a new deal with quarterback Tom Brady, who has one year remaining on his contract.

Yep. I agree. He wants too much money, for what he does. Sorry Reggie. My only question is, WHO is going to give him 8 million a year??? I can't think of one.

If Saints win he Super Bowl, most likely Brees will get MVP... unless the defense makes a few interceptions and it ends similar to the NFCC.

Though even if he doesn't get MVP, I'm sure he'll get a new contract.

That made me go "Aww! Sad!" when I read it, but I have a feeling you're right. :(

I've been hearing this rumor all year. Although I don't want to see Reggie go, we have Pierre and Mike Bell to fill his shoes if they send him packing. But no doubt Brees will get more money!

I think it would be in the best interest for both of them (personally) to stay. Think of it... if the Saints win the Super Bowl, they'll be the biggest icons that city has ever seen. After retirement...
Real estate companies will give them houses to use their name.
Pizza joints will feed them.
Auto dealerships will give them free cars.
They'll make boat loads at autograph signings.
Limo services will drive them around for free.
Clubs and bars will keep them partying all night.
The list goes on.

Yeah sorry guys, the season has been so great that now with all of the Bonuses that will have to be paid out..
(Even Charles grants Feed his kids foundation)
Saints will pretty much be totally strapped after doing an honest redo of Brees contract..
Unless Reggie agree's to renegotiate his contract he's gone.
dumping Charles grant would be a good deal for saints since they'll be better off doing that with the uncapped season and his fillers seemed to have done his job better this season.

Im thinking Shockey will no longer be with us either.

Yeah, Saints fans, sign that man and lock him up through retirement. I may be a die hard Colts fan, but Im also a fan of football. You've got the key to success in #9, pay him what he's earned (he'll prolly give half back to the city anyway)

As for your boy Reggie...I gotta think he's gone. Electrifying at times, but 8 million for a specialty player makes no sense. Unless they plan on lowering his return action and increasing his rushing action, its just not wise to keep him.


The X factor.....an uncapped season. If the owners are willing to shell it out, they could find a way to keep him for at least one more year.

Wait a minute.... Shockey will be a free agent too? I thought we signed him to a long term contract?

There was also speculation that Sharper will be let go as well. Man, this sucks. Who exactly are we going to have left next year??? Geez.

Wait a sec on the bye Reggie talk. He will probably renegotiate his contract and Drew will prob sign for another 5-6 years. Just my 2 cents.

Drew deserves better money and Reggie deserves less. It's simple math. I hope Reggie renegotiates his contract. Otherwise......buh bye.

Brees is smart and Loomis is smart- they'll find a way to get Brees his money.

Brees won't do anything to hurt the team, for example ask for a ton of money causing us to lose key players.

I think we might see a Loomis special here- kind of like the Carney deal, or Hollis Thomas, or the Millers last year. I see Brees staying on after retirement and making some big money and maybe taking less now.

Reggie's Stutter and politician like weasel out when that question was presented to him at an awkward moment by Dieon didn't instill confidence in me about renegotiating but perhaps he didn't want to get into all of that right now.

Drew's going to probably sign for another 7 years and retire a Saint and make the Brees family become the New Orleans new Royal Family.
