You trade to get a punter but not a defensive lineman or linebacker?!?

I can't wait to see this one play out...

I'm still amazed that the Saints were willing to trade up to get a punter last year and were not willing to do the same with glaring needs at Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, and Linebacker...

I see the picks as good, hell, great value picks...

but I mean, did Loomis and the scouting staff take the entire offseason to pat themselves on the back and not prepare the trading scenarios to move up and get some help for the pass rush and run stoppers that are needed?!?

Are we to be a one hit wonder?

So in reviewing the Saints draft there really were two ways to look at it. The Saints have the most competent front office the in the history of the team. Mickey Loomis and crew know what they are doing, they follow their rankings, and never draft for need instead of talent.

The second way to look at the Saints draft is what would have been the reaction from me, fans and experts to the picks if the Saints hadn’t won the Super Bowl?

Shutdown Corner - Doug Farrar

The rich get richer, as the Saints got an absolute steal with USC offensive tackle Charles Brown(notes) at the bottom of the second round. Medical red flags dropped him, but Brown is a legitimate left tackle prospect and gives the team some interesting post-Jammal Brown(notes) options. In the first round, New Orleans added to the defensive backfield with Florida cornerback Patrick Robinson(notes), an athletic but inconsistent player who will undergo the Gregg Williams Crash Course. The pick of Miami tight end Jimmy Graham(notes) in the third round was panned by some, as he was primarily a basketball player for the ‘Canes, but nobody plots offensive mismatches better than Sean Payton, and Graham is a ridiculous athlete. However, LSU defensive tackle Al Woods(notes) may be as important a pick as any for the Saints, given their weakness against the run in three-man fronts. Woods is an underrated big guy who can help in a rotation.

Analysis: The Saints were expected by most to bolster their defense, but after taking CB Malcolm Jenkins in the first-round last season, the defending champs' selection of another corner was a mild surprise. The selection of Brown was not a "need" pick either, but could be a good one for the defending champs down the road. Brown was projected as a first-rounder by many. Graham will join another former Hurricanes tight end, Jeremy Shockey, on the New Orleans roster. Graham must work on his blocking to get on the field. The fourth-round pick, Woods, has talent but needs to be coached up to stick at DT. Tennant was rated by some as one of the top two centers in this draft, and could be the team's long-term answer at the center position. Canfield's best shot to remain a Saint will be on the practice squad.

Bottom Line: Defending champs didn't have a great deal of crying needs, but it was surprising that they didn't add much depth to the defensive front seven.
