After years of holding on to a bottle of whiskey that his father won during the New Orleans Saints first game in 1967, a LaPlace man is getting the sweetest victory: a drink with John Gilliam, who scored the first touchdown in that inaugural game.

Timmy LaBranche Sr., who, per his father's instructions, opened the 43-year-old whiskey only when the Saints made it to the Super Bowl , has plans to meet Gilliam Friday night in New Orleans. Gilliam, 64, who lives in Atlanta, is riding in the Bacchus parade on Sunday.

The two men made plans to share a drink of the whiskey that Roland LaBranche Sr. won at a Norco tavern while watching the first regular season Saints game on Sept. 17, 1967. LaBranche made his children promise that they would not open the bottle until the Saints went to the Super Bowl.

LaBranche said he also wants to get Gilliam to autograph the bottle.

LaBranche said he quoted WWL sports announcer Jim Henderson just before opening the bottle at the family's party Sunday.

"I said, 'Pigs have flown. Hell has frozen over and Roland's bottle is finally getting opened.'"

Old Grand Dag ? Not sure about its potency and potability with its advanced age.
