Darren Sharper franchise?
 

With all this talk of Sharper hitting the market, and testing it to see what offers come up, we know his best fit is in Nola, and he knows that. Can we tag him for the year and see how it goes?

Like all key players on a Super Bowl Champion team, he will get some interest. However, considering his age, I don't think he will strike a big deal on the open market. I do believe he will get a good deal from the Saints, probably in the area of a 2 years with some kind of 3rd year option.

I believe that he'll stay in N. O. He couldn't be in a better system than he's in now. Also, Payton and GW understand how to get the most out of him. They rest him from practice pretty often during the season and I think he's been pretty healthy for someone his age. Let's hope it carries into next season as well. Loomis is smart enough to know what an integral part he is and will get a deal done I'm sure.

I heard today that they will probably tag him.For somewhere in the range of six and half million dollars.He should be happy with that considering he made just over one million this year.Oh and he got that Champonship as well.

Rotoworld reported we'll probably tag him... and maybe try to work out a 2-3 year deal. If we can't, then at least we'll have him for another season. He is going to be 35... so the tag is probably the best way to go. With that said, if he retires and does not become an analyst, I'd love to have him on the staff.

Darren Sharper(notes) was expecting to become a free agent this offseason but it's looking a lot like the New Orleans Saints are going to stick the franchise tag on the free safety, according to NFL.com

After all, the 34-year-old is the active league leader in interceptions. It looks like New Orleans would like to have just one more year of his services before cutting him loose, though it is possible that the team could try and sign him to a two- or three-year deal in order to have him finish out his career in the Big Easy.
If Sharper gets the franchise tag, the team will owe him around $6.5 million. Not bad.

in the uncapped season franchising a player doesn't keep him as safe as it did in the past. That is, teams can spend the 6+ mil to get him or offer us picks with not big hit.

Hopefully he stays since he was quoted as saying he wanted to "Repeat. Repeat. Repeat."

Yeah, I don't expect that the Saints will just let Sharper walk. He was way too valuable to their defensive scheme last year and his career was revived under GW's system. I wouldn't expect them to sign him for more than two or three years, though.

WHy do we need to tag him?? Lets just talk with him & offer him 2.5 million PLUS incentives on a two year contract & hope he really does want to continue playing with Greg WIlliams!!

He'll get a two year deal valued at around $4mill/ + a $5mill signing bonus plus an option for a 3rd. 34 years old, teams will look at that and discount heavily. But it is a deal that the Saints have to make. Franchising him doesn't make a lot of sense considering all the FA's we have testing the market. Lock that bad boy up and move on to the next challenge.

i like sharper but i feel that we would have just as much success letting one of our up and coming guys take his place....or at least fill in next season for spot duty and get some valuable experience

we have guys like usama young, chip vaughn and possibly stanley arnoux waiting for their turns and not to mention our first round draft pick last year in malcom jenkins who could use the experience playin center field as well

I heard it on NFL Network, but it was basically assumptions, i think Saints keep him for Minimal instead of throwing franchise tag on him, we have a few other people we have to do that too, and thank god it wont be on Charles grant

Sharper along with Vilma are the backbone of this defense hopefully he stays in Black & Gold!

Im fine with tagging Sharper. He could be offered more guaranteed money by other squads, and Im sure hed prefer to cash in during his twilight. He has his ring. Some 6 mil per for the next couple years seems reasonable for both parties.

Out of all of our UFA's, I see Sharper being the most targeted. If you have to franchise him, do it. Keep him a Saint till he retires. Whatever it takes... Now Grant on the other hand..... I think he would look good in Detroit....

i think this is a good move to franchise him. we need to keep him, but, how many more great years does he have left? if he has a great year for us again last year, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, we repeat, we sign him to a 2 or 3 year contract (assuming he wont sign a 1-year) and let him retire w/ us.

He is the heart of that defense....and you have to admit that they would skip a beat if Sharper wasn't there. Negotiate a three year deal with incentives and keep him around after he retires.
