Free Agent Series: Should the Saints re-sign Pierre Thomas?
 

Free agency is all set to begin a new year in the NFL on March 5 and the world champion New Orleans Saints have a bit of work to do. There isn't a lot of things that need to be done, but a number of names are on the list as restricted or unrestricted free agents.

Should the Saints get an offer on a restricted free agent (RFA), then they can either choose to match it and keep the player or not match it and lose the player. Losing the player means compensation of some kind, usually draft picks, will be headed their way.

One of the biggest names on the RFA list for the Saints is starting running back Pierre Thomas.

Thomas is an undrafted free agent out of the University of Illinois who has been with the team since 2007. He has become one of the stars of the number one offense in the NFL and even been one of the unconfirmed causes of the release of Saints' legend Deuce McAllister. So the question remains, should the Saints re-sign Pierre Thomas?

This isnt even up for negotiation. The Saints arent going to let him slip through there fingers. Hes better than all of there other backs.

Without question, we sign him for the amount he is worth. Pierre Thomas is an excellent back and an excellent team player. Plus, he continues to improve. He is, IMO, the most important element of the Saints running game.

Definetly, in my opinion pierre is a great all round back, he has the power to go up the middle and bounce of tackles (which he showed numerous times in SB44), whereas he also has the ability to be a fast back getting to the outsides. He is fantastic in the passing game, especially on screen passes, he can block in the backfield. He is vital to our production, keep him around!!!!

So far, everyone has voted "definitely" to that question. I believe Loomis will work on PT's contract as soon as Jahri Evan's is completed.

PT always keeps going at least through the first contact, and often through multiple contacts with the defense. And the thought of him on the receiving end of a screen pass in or near the red zone has me still salivating, and I'm sure has any opposing defense very worried. The Saints will match any reasonable offer for PT; as far as I know, no offers have come in yet.

They had better re-sign him. If Loomis wants this team to continue on a winning streak, he needs to pay Pierre yesterday!

I'm a huge Pierre Thomas fan. I think he could easily rush for 1,200 yards and 10+ touchdowns, but we can't overpay for him. If a team makes him a reasonable offer we should match it, but a 2nd round pick would be very useful for continuing to improve the defense.

I had a college professor who used to write "water is wet" on our papers if we stated the obvious. I guess he thought "NO SH**" wasn't appropriate.

The obvious here is, yes, we should re-sign our best RB. We should also not cut Brees, or fire Payton.

In case none of you noticed the Saints put a second round tender on him. They have in essense already resigned him. In a normal year his 4 years of experience would have him eligible for unrestricted free agency. Because of the uncapped year he now needs 6 years.

So if a team wants him they have to give up both a second rounder and pay him a substantial, and I'm talking top ten RB money, for us not to match their offer. Not happening.

Pierre will be on our team next year. We will pay him $1.684MM next year (a bargain) and we will probably tender him at a 1st round level next year as he will be a restricted FA again.

Yes resighn but at the same time this is something the saints don't have to worry about till next season he is a restricted free agent

Not always. Sometimes it needs a "wetting" agent. ;)
Anyways PT has to be a very very very very high priority for re-signing. But I voted Yes for the right price because in the maniac world of professional sports you do not just keep on playing more and more, regardless. e.g. Do you pay PT more than Drew?

First lock up our O-line, then Thomas. If there is no one to block for us, it doesn't matter if you resign him or not.
