David Thomas

Lets talk about this guy for a bit. He's not one of those flashy TE's but man he played a huge role in our success last year. I really hope we re-sign him. He made 1st downs when they counted and I thought blocked really well. I think he even played a little FB.

What are your thoughts?:bng:

Re: David Thomas

I won't lose sleep either way. He's probably the 8th option in our offense when we throw, behind Colston, Henderson, Meachem, Moore, Shockey, Bush, Thomas. Given the status of Billy Miller's achilles and Shockey's propensity to get injured yearly, I would put it past the Saints to bring him back at the right price. $750K to $800K next year tops.

I'm sure you'd pay him millions to keep him. I like to operate in this little place called the "real world". I said I'd like to keep Thomas at the right price. Do you even read my posts?

Re: David Thomas

hmmmm...yes i do and i would say 1.5 million wouldnt be bad for Thomas..he was key for us in many games...i guess you would have to watch them though..

Re: David Thomas

I watched every minute of every game this year. And if you'd pay David Thomas rougly $100K less than Pierre Thomas is going to make this year, then you are either high on something or just like thinking about real dollars in monopoly dollars terms. Good, let's pay everyone on the team $10MM a year!! It's not your money, why would you care?

Re: David Thomas

I think Dave "Wendys" Thomas was an integral part of our offense. His versatility alone (receiving TE, Blocker, H-Back) warrants the Saints extending his contract; which I believe they will do. Is he a threat deep down the middle of the field (like Shockey is)? NO. Does he provide good value? YES. Can he stay healthy (unlike Shockey)? YES. Will he be re-signed? YES.

He provides good value at the right price. Totally agree. That price is not $1.5 MM next year. Sorry.

Re: David Thomas

I like the guy a lot, although in our offense the second tight end looks good pretty often.

It seems like this type of player- (the Millers, that guy from Yale, even Dinkins) does well in our system

Re: David Thomas

David Thomas is better than Shockey after the catch. He's more versatile too. Thomas keeps his feet after making catch adjustments (unlike Shockey) and has good vision when going downhill. He was solid for us this year. The front office will decide what he's worth, make him an offer, and I hope he takes it.

Me three. But I bet it won't be $1.5MM next year. Want to put some money on it?

I already feel great. I know I'm right. Do I know how much the team is going to pay Jahri Evans or Drew Brees this offseason? No, but I have a pretty good idea, for anyone interested.

Yeah, need to bring this guy back at the right price. With so many people to sign there is no way the Saints can overpay for his services. No doubt, however, he was an extremely valuable weapon for the Saints.

I actually live in San Diego now. I just haven't updated my profile recently. Yes the 72 degrees everyday and hot chicks everywhere in bikinis that I'm staring at out of my window right now has really rubbed off on me.

What's the "right price" for a player who effectively executed three different positions for the number one offense in the NFL?

I could see a 3-4 year deal for $4.5-5.3 mill - back-loaded w incentives and a $1mill signing bonus.

he's a hell of a backup. i hope we can keep him.

stockman311 03-08-2010 01:57 PM

Re: David Thomas

I suppose that deal is possible. I guess we will have to wait and see. I thought he was good last year. 35 catches not bad for backup TE.

Hook em Horns, bring him back. He saved our bacon after losing Miller and later on Shockey

I like Thomas a lot. He is the same type player as Billy Miller. Good receiver,
so-so size, matchup, and blocking ability. I think it's time to draft another
TE with Shockey's size and talents. That would mean releasing Billy and
keeping Thomas.

Looks like Thomas will be making $1.18MM on his one year deal. So I was off by about $300K and you were off by about $400K. The Saints split the difference on us. :)

Re: David Thomas

I like Thomas so much I don't know why we drafted Graham (well not really he could be good, I just still am not sold on him). This kid had one helluva season last year and really did this offense some good. You could make the argument he was the best TE on the team.

stock311 your tough on this guy man. he played huge for the black and gold when evans went down.if he's not around for 2010 it means we get a dammed good trade or draft pick next year.
