Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

Does it worry anyone else about how saints are taking the low balling role and not rewarding some of our players or trying to skim as much as possible in a uncapped season?
Does this have the potential to ruin the team's image for a long time?
Who's going to want to come to a team that after a Big bowl win starts to show their poker face and allow some of their best players seek interest from other teams.
Im not sure what the Tender offers were but if they were any good or showed a reflection of gratitude why hasn't anyone jumping on any of these deals?
Giants, Patriots and Steelers were able to cling on to most of their players and make them very happy after bowl wins.
I know we're in a awkward position with the uncapped season but damn, whats the hold up?
well thats my rant.

Think of a tender as a place holder.
The Saints have too many RFAs to work contracts with all of them in a matter of days. Placing tenders on them allows Loomis to work contracts on a priority basis (should the FO want to sign the player to a multi-year deal). Should another team offer a Saints RFA a contract, since the Saints would have a right to match it, Loomis' work would be reduced to reviewing the offered contract and decide "yes" or "no", rather than going through the motions of negociating the contract.

I have mixed emotions. Nobody has escaped, yet, that bugs me a lot. I will wait and see what transpires before I answer this question, but I do see where you're coming from with this.

I like Fujita, the guy, and he was a legitimate LB'er, but I do think that he is replacable...possibly with someone already on the roster.

We just won the SB based on recent decisions made by management and exceptionally skillful coaching, so I'm not gonna rag on them...yet.

Not worried. A lot of players leave after winning the superbowl. As disappointed as I am about Fujita leaving I understand that he is not worth $5 million a year at this stage of his career. Look how many of you don't think a certain RB isn't worth $8 million this year yet he scored 11 TD's and you want to give a LB with 58 tackles, 1 sack and a fumble recovery $5 million.

Didn't like losing a proven leader, player in Fujita...

That said, the Saints more than almost, most teams, have to be very aware of salary cap and collective bargaining agreements...

And winning the Superbowl could have happened at a better time; not that any time is a bad time to win the Superbowl...

That said, they really have played this thing quite well and the current status quo of being able to restrict more free agents than in a "capped" year, coupled with an especially deep draft, has played out quite nicely...

I am still waiting to hear an announcement about Jahri Evans' contract.

Hopefully, it will be all done soon, so Loomis can get on with Pierre Thomas' deal.

"Reward"??

The Lombardi Trophy was the team's reward for last year.

It's a new season and now is when the number-crunching really begins.

Emotions aside - "How" the FO spends money could get us back to the SB... Not rewarding someone with a big payday.

Money ruins it all!! 5 million for Fujita is WAY OUT OF LINE. He isn't worth it!!

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

Sure, we would like most of the SB Saints to return and proactively offering bucks would help that. But I also think that the Saints are in a stronger position to keep or obtain good and very good players than most, especially players who see a SB ring as "priceless".
Lastly, we don't know the level of communication behind closed doors. Maybe, just maybe, the Saints have spoken informally to many but that news ain't coming out, There is still time to sort the players out.

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

I would prefer to gain a quality LB like Fujita rather than lose him. So yes it is a bit of a concern. The money it would have taken to keep him was peanuts compartively speaking.

Just something to consider. If Fujita would have played for the Browns the past couple of years then won the Superbowl with them. I would have to think that most of us would be excited to then sign him in free agency.

So from a fans perspective it sucks. From a GMs perspective I guess not so much.

Good point...im sure the Brownie fans do feel that way..and they should they got a quality football player..now we have to find someone on the roster ..draft..or free agency to fill his shoes..I dont think people on here realize how much Fujita helped our team...

Well said sir. There are just too many FA's this year to make it all happen. Remember guys, we are the 3rd richest team in the NFL which means we have plenty of money to spend. It will all get worked out by the time camp starts.

Do you guys think that if the Saints won 3 super bowls in 4 years you would still find something to piss and moan about? My God, give them some time, freaking free agency just started and we have a ton of free agents. Just because it is an uncapped year doesn't mean everyone is going on a spending spree. The Bears are the only ones spending money right now and last time I checked Julius Peppers can't play quarter back. Give it a rest.

nothing to worry about. I'd be more worried bout who they bring in to replace anyone we lose. We still have the draft as well so we can continue to build our team around a few core players. We can't keep everyone.

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

I think this rant is way off base. So is the idea that we are turning into jerks to quote Strato. IMO, the weak spots of our team last year were the defense's inability to stop the run at times and the lack of a constant pass rush. Both of these things can be helped with improved play from the defensive line and linebacking corps. So, to get upset because we did not match an overpriced offer for Fujita (from the Browns no less...think about all the great decisions they have made over the years) and because we did not "reward" players like Grant makes no sense.
Our offense is leaps and bounds ahead of our defense. Sure, we created turnovers and that won us a lot of games, including the Superbowl. But a lot of that is because teams had to keep up with our offensive production. Don’t kid yourself, if we had not been so good on O, or if an unfortunate injury happens on that side of the ball, then we are lucky to be a .500 club.
I would rather see us build a "dominating" type defense that forces three-and-outs, rarely gives up 100 yard rushing performances, and doesn't make QBs like Kevin Kolb, Josh Freeman and Jason Campbell look like Pro Bowlers. Imagine how sweet it would be to have a top 5-type defense to match with our top 3-type offense. We are not going to be that type of defense with the players we had last year. If we build a D that matches our O, then we build our dynasty.
Sure, Fujita was a fine player for us and what he did for the Saints on and off the field is appreciated. But to call us jerks and say we are cheap is uncalled for. The current FO that brought us our first Championship deserve better than that IMO.

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

When you win a Superbowl, teams start overpaying for the players you had. That's the nature of the game. Am I worried about us low balling our own players? Who says we're low balling?

I'll ask my own set of questions...

Would you re-sign Fujita at the expense of giving Evans a new contract?

Would you re-sign Fujita at the expense of giving Brees an extension?

Would you re-sign Fujita at the expense of re-signing Pierre Thomas?

There are plenty of other priorities that need to be taken care of first. If other teams are willing to overpay for our players, power to them and whoever signs elsewhere. They got their ring... it's time for them to cash in.

i feel all's concern. we have to trust the upper management who got us here. fujita is not worth the 5 mil. guys. he was out this year for a few games that we made it o.k. without him in the huddle. we have drew, p.t. etc. to put in the mix. it really does bother me to. we are losing some quality back ups.

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

We have nothing to worry about. When the dust settles sharper will be a saint again. Grant, MCcRAY i think is better. If you looked at stats alone FUjita only had 58 tackles and 1 sack last YEAR.

Re: Does it worry any of you about Saints Org Poker face after a Superbowl win?

It's like this, Fujita is a decent linebacker, but not worth resigning for that price. To make our dynasty, we have to upgrade on defense. Letting some of these fan favorites go is smart management for our team if they're not producing. Some are past their prime, not productive anymore, and overpaid. Look at deuce, all time great Saints running back, but it was time. If we get right at outside linebacker, end, and D tackle, we're good. Even if you lose Sharper, if you have a great pass rush it wouldn't matter. It would still be nice to have Sharper around to mentor Jenkins. With Porter and Greer at corner, Jenkins had better be making the move to safety, soon.
