If New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees keeps playing like he has the last few seasons, then at some point the question of whether he will be enshrined in Canton will require a serious discussion.
For now, in a foyer of the Orlando Ritz-Carlton where the NFL owners are holding their annual meeting, he's already a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Hall has set up a small display at the open end of a long hallway leading to the strictly off-limits meeting rooms. The glass cases that comprise the display hold items ranging from a Jim Brown jersey to a pair of battered high-top laceups once worn by Slingin' Sammy Baugh.

But the biggest case, rising above the others and immediately catching the eye, holds a gleaming white jersey. The black, gold-rimmed '9' is instantly recognizable to any Saints fan. What makes this particular Drew Brees jersey worthy of Hall of Fame is the small, rather garish orange-and-navy patch on the left shoulder that reads, "XLIV."

It's the jersey Brees wore while earning the MVP award in the Saints first championship, and its brightness is as much a testament to the outstanding protection Brees got that night in Miami from his offensive line as it is to the Canton dry cleaners.

The same case also holds a hard-hat, painted taxicab yellow and stickered on both sides with the familiar "G" of the Green Bay Packers. On the front, however, is a big, black fleur-de-lis. It's the hat former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue wore when he toured the Superdome for the first time after Hurricane Katrina.

I had forgotten about this part. I remember taking offense at his wearing a GB hard hat when the Saints have the same item. Then with chagrin remembered that the Black and Gold Shop was closed for a little while at that time.
