New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis Friday, April 23, 2010 Can you talk about the selection of Charles Brown? "He was the best available player and the best available player for us on our board by far. We're excited to have him come in and compete. I'm excited about the upside he has as a player." Had you not had a lot of contact with him previously? "No, we didn't. We weren't expecting to take an offensive tackle early in the draft, but when it came to the pick, it was clearly the best available player to us, I think very similar in circumstance to when we took Deuce McAllister and when we took Will Smith. There really wasn't a lot of debate." Can you fill us in if there have been trade talks regarding Jammal Brown? "We've had a few conversations about Jammal and had a few conversations leading up to this draft, but there's nothing imminent and we're going to let it sort itself out. We certainly didn't draft Charles with the idea that we're moving on from Jammal. It wasn't the case at all, in fact, we like the tackles that we have. Jammal's obviously been to the Pro Bowl and although he was injured last year, we know he's a very good player. We like what Jermon Bushrod has done for us and we like what Zach Strief has done for us and obviously Jon Stinchcomb was in the Pro Bowl this year. There's nothing wrong with stockpiling offensive linemen and tackles in particular and so, that's part of our thinking here." Read the rest here... Yet another Payton injury project. He sure is talented, and I hope he works out as well as some of Payton's other projects. (Like Brees and Vilma for example).

I think it's a great pick. Can never have too many stud OTs on your team, and this guy was graded by almost everybody as a mid- to late-first round tackle. Great value.

It's not that he's not a great pick...but to repeat, we've got to get that defensive line a more formidable presence and I thought we could have traded up as we had done for a punter/kickoff specialist (which worked out for us)...

We're obviously doing BPA, which I agree is the right strategy. Just a difference in philosophies I guess.
