Canfield was a highly touted high school quarterback who never seemed to reach his potential until he was asked to fill in for starter Lyle Moevao during his senior season. He has prototypical NFL size and release but has always struggled to come up big when under pressure. He does a good job of reading coverages and making pre-snap reads but can struggle when things break down and he needs to improvise or make plays on the move. He has enough of an arm to make most of the throws needed in the NFL but lacks the cannon needed to hit small windows or hit receivers in stride on the deep outs. He has enough going for him to give him a chance to be drafted in the later rounds or sign with a team as a priority free agent.

I'm no one.

Hmmm a lefty. But I like the pick seems like he was starting to come into his own this last year.

lefty

not a lot of downside

read a lot of analysis on him and the only downfall many have for him is his arm strength

say he is very smart and makes great pre-snap reads

many say he doesnt have the arm strength to throw the ball deep or fit it into tight spots but then again he was the most accurate deep passer at the senior bowl for the north

Analysis
Accuracy: Good to very good accuracy on the variety of NFL-caliber routes in this offense. Consistently hits his receivers in stride on crossing routes, posts and down the seam in the intermediate zone, as well as over the top on fly routes. Good accuracy and timing on the deep out. Throws the ball before the receiver has turned and consistently hits his man low and away from the defender and near the sideline. Can be a bit lazy with his footwork on screens, resulting in some poor throws underneath. Guides the pass as he is shuffling back, too often forcing the receiver to catch low passes that disrupt the timing on these plays.

Arm Strength: Doesn't own a howitzer, but has plenty of arm strength to make every NFL throw, including the deep out from the opposite hash. Can zip the ball into tight windows for underneath routes. Throws a beautiful deep ball with good trajectory, making it an easy catch for his receivers to track over their shoulder.

Setup/Release: Fluid drop back from the center, though he also has experience from the shotgun. Quick set-up and delivery. Locates his target, sets his feet and throws with an over-the-top delivery. Ball comes out of his hand properly -- high and quickly.

Reading Defenses: Generally good poise in the pocket. Steps up when pressured outside and exhausts his possibilities through the air before he scrambles. Keeps his eyes downfield and moves through his progressions as he drops back. Willing to stare down the barrel and take the big hit to complete the pass. Has to learn the throw the ball away, rather than take the sack. At his best in the red zone -- where he threw 18 touchdowns and no interceptions in 2009.

On the Move: Lost approximately 20 pounds during the 2009 offseason to improve his mobility. Willing to take what the defense gives him, but isn't going to scare anyone with his elusiveness or straight-line speed. Has the body control to move left, right, front or back, square his shoulders and fire the ball with accuracy.

Intangibles: Highly touted prep prospect who graduated from high school a semester early to begin work on the complicated OSU pro-style offense. Struggled through inconsistency and injury early in his career, losing starts to Lyle Moevao. Developed into a team leader as he gained experienced and was voted a captain despite entering his senior season having to win the starting spot. Even-keeled personality is among his best attributes, according to coaches. Psychology major who graduated in December 2009. Suffered a torn labrum in his left (throwing) shoulder in 2007 and underwent offseason surgery to repair it. The rehabilitation caused him to miss all of spring 2008 practice and all but five games that season.

And who's he going to be working with? Drew Brees. Hopefully Drew will carry this guy around in his hip pocket for a few seasons, and Sean can improve those areas mentioned above that he's lacking in.

I didn't really care who they drafted in the 7th, I was more interested in seeing which direction the team went. Canfield can be a starter for us - in 2013 or 2014!

Accuracy and fast progression trumps arm strength, which often works against a young QB.

Something for us to develop and trade down the line.
