Likewise, I don’t believe in rabbit’s foots, karma or lucky pennies. But I do believe in the Madden curse. Especially last year, when Troy Polamalu was stricken by appearing on the cover of the famed video game, in what was just another in a long line of victims. Yet every year, we have no shortage of NFL players willing to be on the cover.

Drew Brees is no exception. The Super Bowl MVP joined Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith on XX 1090 Radio in San Diego (via Sports Radio Interviews) to talk about the cover jinx, and why he is not afraid.

“Well, you know, I think that thing has kinda taken on a life of its own,” Brees said. “Obviously its something that everyone jokes about and I guess it’s not really much of a joke. First of all, this was the first year the fans have voted on it. It’s not like I was just chosen by Madden. The fans voted on it, they voted me on the cover, so I see that as a big honor. …

“I thought there were so many positives of being on the cover. C’mon this is something you dream of when you’re a kid, being on the cover of a video game.”

Positives like ACL tears, wrist injuries and all of the other maladies that have sidelined the other cover boys?
