Sharper signs with saints (merged article)

Saints re-signed FS Darren Sharper to a one-year contract.
Sharper, 34, tied for the league lead with nine INTs last season while also chipping in 71 tackles and 15 pass breakups. Though not much of a run-stopping safety, Sharper's ball skills and aggressiveness in coverage always made New Orleans his best fit under up-tempo coordinator Gregg Williams. 2009 first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins will stay at corner, and battle Randall Gay for nickel back duties. Usama Young will continue to focus on special teams.

One more year for Jenkins to learn from the master and quality backup at the position now. I still see Robinson pushing for the nickel back slot. He will see the field this year.

sorry saps who say he is losing a step... what does that equate to 8 INT's down from 9... I'll take that.

Welcome back... long sigh of relief.

Great news! Now if we can just get Pierre Thomas re-signed, we can relax through the offseason and enjoy being the reigning champion until training camp.

Re: SHARPER SIGNS ONE YEAR DEAL

This is the best place for Darren to be. On a quality team with a DC who gets him, a system built for his skills and intelligence, and secondary teammates who he can trust. With next season being uncapped, he's better off with this one year deal - my bet is that he'll get an extension if his knee holds up and is productive in the first quarter of the season. He needs to be thinking about transitioning into coaching at 36, where he'll make far more money for the next 30 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Thomas and Jahri Evans extensions come up very soon.

Re: SHARPER SIGNS ONE YEAR DEAL

This is huge. Welcome back Ronnie Lott... I mean, Darren Sharper.

All kidding aside here is a quote from Lott concerning Sharper.
"That guy is special"

I think loyal fans knew the resigning would happen but the time it took to occur shows how much of a business football is. Sport, my eye.

I'm amazed no other team signed that dude. I mean c'mon... who was it that won the Super Bowl last season?

We are so freakin lucky Atlanta or Tampa didn't end up with him.

To all the folks who might have bashed on Sharper during this resigning transition, you are now a Colts fan or Bills fan Take your pick.

Sorry.

Choupique 05-03-2010 05:44 PM

Re: Sharper is back....

Sounds about right.

This is HUGE. Darren will spend ANOTHER year teaching all those young D backs what it takes to make Ronnie Lott refer to them as special.

Re: Sharper signs with saints (merged article)

This is Perfect!!!!!

I think it's the way to approach Sharper too. If you look at his time w/ Minn..... he debut with a stunning season, then put up moderate numbers the following years (maybe job security). You might get a "new team, renewed drive" from him. Maybe plays with a chip on his shoulder after being released.... but that's hard to replicate year after year (or at least his stats might reflect that).

My opinion is, you shouldn't mess up a good thing. Sharper was the answer. There's no better option in the league right now and even if you get a toned down, job security version of Sharper, it's still better than 99% of other players at his position.

ESPN NFL - Pro Bowl S Darren Sharper returns to Saints, agreeing to 1-year contract; had 9 INTs last season

This calls for a celebration! I'm going to need a bottle of Jager.
