Saints aim for Meachem's training-camp return after toe surgery

Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem had surgery Monday to fix torn cartilage on the second toe of his left foot, and coach Sean Payton told NewOrleans.com that he hopes the 2007 first-round draft pick can return "by the first week or so" of training camp in late July.



"It's good that we caught it now," Payton said. "It began bothering him again and became aggravated the more he started running on it. So we just felt let's go ahead and get it fixed now."
Meachem injured the toe last season, according to Payton, and the receiver still felt pain during the Saints' offseason workout program. However, Meachem said Saturday that "it's just a nick."
Meachem's NFL career started slowly -- he missed his rookie season in 2007 because of a knee injury -- but he broke out in 2009 with 45 receptions for 722 yards and nine touchdowns.

i thought he injured that toe last season. that should have been fixed already but i'm not the dr.

Toe injuries have been known to linger though too. It will be interesting to see if this speeds up any perceived need to re-sign Lance Moore any at all or not...

Why do they all wait so long. I'd have it done right after the season ??? I don't get it.

Wasn't it a toe injury that put Adrian Arrington on IR in his rookie season too? I'm just saying...

Yeah I feel the same. My guess is they want to get different opinions before they make the decision.

I heard on the news tonight that he might likely miss most of camp (but will probably be present). Hope's for the best!

Toe and finger injuries are known to linger because the toes and fingers get less circulation than the rest of the body.

Glad it happened early- man if LM is back fully healthy this season- that is 4 pretty good wideouts!! Yeah baby!!!

Anyone really interested in seeing what this kid from Miami can do??

Maybe he thought it would heal itself...........I'm bad about doing that with rugby injuries.
