ESPN reports Merriman is being dangled out for trades.

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Should we make a move for him? Supposedly he fired his agent so that a deal could be negotiated more smoothly. I always felt the move would be good yet odd at the same time because we aren't really lacking ...

ESPN reports Merriman is being dangled out for trades.

Should we make a move for him? Supposedly he fired his agent so that a deal could be negotiated more smoothly. I always felt the move would be good yet odd at the same time because we aren't really lacking DEs and he'd have a hard time playing OLB in the 4-3.

I'd love to have Merriman here, but not at the cost of a first round pick that the Chargers wanted. If something else can be worked out, I'm for it.

I would say "no" but that doesn't really express how much I don't want the guy here. He is the epitome of that nice Mustang you see for sale that looks like an awesome deal. Then you open the hood and see what is really wrong with it.

Plus, that is absoluty the most childish sack dance I have ever seen.

On the other hand, if he has a prescription for vicodin he could be an obvious signing. (I will slap myself for this one).

Re: ESPN reports Merriman is being dangled out for trades.

the problem with merriman is I have no idea what they'd do with him? The most logical choice would probably be DE. Don't think he could play OLB. DE isn't really one of our holes right now; as I think we have a good DE group. I'd rather trade for a pure 4-3 OLB or a DT. I think he'd definitely help with getting pressure on the QB though; which is what GWs defenses are built around(which is why we built up our secondary so well so that when the pressure forces errant throws). Its an iffy situation, and it really depends on what the front office is hoping for in our defense next year.

His price is just too high and we have a decent rotation at DE. What we need most is a disruptive DT imo The OLB plays less than 50% of the snaps according to an article I read yesterday. The defense inserts a corner or runs a variation of the basic 4-3 with different personnel.

I think DT is a lot more important, I can agree with that. But for stopping those runs that hit into the second level, we need a good pair of OLBs that can diagnose the run and shut it. With a good pair of OLBs most of those 5-10 yd runs on us would have been like 3-5 yd runs. Thats very important for stopping teams from getting passed the sticks and extending drives. Also very very important in pass coverage. If we end up giving a lot up for Merriman though without addressing the DT or the OLB spots I'd be sort of disappointed. If we added him in compilation to those two spots though, I'd be happy. We have a good overall setup for our defense. Our secondary is possibly one of the best in the league(especially with the addition of PR). Vilma is just badass. Our DE rotation is going to be improved tremendously(though having Merriman would make it badass).

We also have a ton of trade value on our team to address all those positions.
