Falcons want outdoor stadium

LOL @ that. There goes any real home field advantage. Noise in a stadium is not like a dome and ATL weather is pretty mild during football season. Here's is the Article:

The Atlanta Falcons are likely to leave the Georgia Dome some time in the next few years, and when they do, team President Rich McKay says, they're likely to play outdoors.

McKay told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Falcons believe an outdoor stadium makes the most sense not just for football, but for other events.

"When you look at the open air stadium it will help us in our pursuit of the World Cup as a city and a region," McKay said. "It will help us to attract World Cup games either in 2018 or 2022. The economic impact to the area would be pretty dramatic. We think open air definitely helps that bid process."

But while an open-air stadium might help Atlanta get World Cup games, it would make it impossible for Atlanta to get other events that the Georgia Dome has hosted, such as the Final Four. That could make an outdoor stadium a tougher sell for the taxpayers who will be asked to foot part of the bill.

McKay, however, says the Falcons are committed to a stadium proposal that's right for the team, the city and the state. And McKay also says Falcons owner Arthur Blank wants to stay in downtown Atlanta.

"Our first preference would be to be downtown," McKay said. "That's something that Arthur is focused on. If we can make it happen, we are going to try."

The Falcons have played in the Georgia Dome since 1992, but it is now considered somewhat outdated (which makes me, as someone who can remember when the Falcons played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, feel old). Atlanta would likely need a new stadium before it could host another Super Bowl.

Ok Atlanta, you build your open air stadium, that no one will use, so you can host Uruguay and Honduras for the World Cup 12 years from now. And when one team looses, those soccer nut jobs will burn your city to the ground.

I like em too, thats why i would Love for New Orleans to get a Retractable dome stadium..
Open air in New Orleans still haven't mastered it's drainage system to prevent flooding, could you imagine flooding in the stadium? OMG.. Retractable is the way to go..
I know Miami has a Open air stadium it's nice and all but they have had plenty of moved games, i'd rather not go through that hassle, not to mention Louisiana don't have any other Professional stadiums to just move to like Miami does in FL.

yes but living in ATL, I can tell you there's no extreme weather here except the heat in August. It doesn't get below freezing usually until jan-feb here. So there won't be that advantage for them. (since they won't have a home game in the play-offs  )

That was kind of my point with the Uruguay and Honduras World Cup comment. Nobody cares about the world cup, nobody will be watching it except a bunch of lunatic soccer fans from another country who will riot when their team loses.

Are you familiar with Rugby football?......the father of American football before pads were introduced? Try to watch a game sometime. It's fun to watch but can be difficult to follow. But, I agree about soccer wholeheartedly. Soccer has taken over in the states, but then again so has the Spanish speaking population.

I actually used to get up early on Saturday mornings, to watch the New Zealand All Blacks play, on Fox Sports. Those guys are intense. I like Rugby, it's freaking brutal! Soccer is like watching paint dry....

Almost every teacher in Georgia took a 4% pay cut this year, and every other public servant: police, EMT, firefighters, also took a hit.

So, there isn't tax money for the important things like education and public safety, but there is $$$ for a stadium that is completely unnecessary. What is the GA dome, 12 years old?

ass-backwards fiscal responsibilty

Agreed. Was thinking the same thing. Out here in California, they're cutting jobs in schools at an alarming rate, but talking about building the 40 whiners a new stadium. When does the madness end?

How about a retractable roof so they can host everything?

Hey, the Georgia Dome is already a circus tent. They could just remove those bed sheets off the top.

how about they just use the facilities they have?

I am not attacking you- it just pisses me off that politicians and urban planners do not have the foresight to build stadiums and arenas that are multi-functional.

So ATL wants to be considered for a World Cup bid. Great. So that is one event every 20 years. You host the 6 group matches and then maybe 1-2 playoff (knock-out) matches. Is that enough to build a new stadium?
Concerts? No. We have Phillips Arena, the dome and several other 5K seating venues.

Ya know, most of the domes built after the Super Dome are gone now. I just can't help but think that they got it right and built the Super Dome to last and the others were junk, only designed to last a decade or so. And when the time comes to replace it, I do hope they build something designed to last with maybe a retractable roof. Oh and its gotta be adjacent to the FQ. Theres nothing quite like walking up Poydras to the game with the crowd all in Black and Gold. That can't be lost.

hahahahahahaha!

You know, lets face it. Outdoor stadiums on a decent weather day are the best. I sat in Candlestick in the cold, the Sombrero in the heat, Shreveport's I-Bowl in the rain. --- and I loved it all. The view is what does it for me. I wish the Saints would play one November game in Tiger Stadium, just one a year.
