Saints move Jenkins to free safety while Sharper rehabs knee



METAIRIE, La. -– Malcolm Jenkins, the New Orleans Saints' first-round draft pick in 2009, has been moved from cornerback to free safety, coach Sean Payton said after an organized team activity Thursday.

Darren Sharper, 34, is the Saints' starting free safety, but moving Jenkins there clearly is insurance in case the veteran has problems with his surgically repaired knee. It also allows the team to groom Jenkins to one day take over Sharper's spot.
Sharper had minor microfracture surgery on his left knee following the Super Bowl. Payton said earlier this month that Sharper is expected to be ready for training camp in July.
Jenkins started six of 14 games at cornerback last season when starters Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer went down with injuries. Jenkins finished with 55 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception.
New Orleans drafted Florida State cornerback Patrick Robinson in the first round last month -- a move that triggered speculation the team could move Jenkins to safety.

jenkins played well at corner last season

i dont believe the move is because he struggled at corner

agreed he played well at corner, i think he will excel at safety however, could be an all pro at that position

He did well, but I agree he will be much better at FS. Sharper 2.0 :)

I think I agree with the majority. He can be a decent to above average CB, but can probably be an all-pro FS.

I agree that this move makes perfect sense right now. I just hope he's a good student.

Sharper is better...dont kid yourselves...lol.,...but for the future and backup Jenkins is ok..he better listen to everything D.Sharp tells him...

MJ had some great lays at corner and in nickel last year. He almost picked Manning in the SB right before Porter did it.

I'm OK with anything that gets this guy on the field the most. He's a play-maker.

So does that mean he would play in the nickel, or does that still go to Gay? I'm thinking that Gay would still come in on nickel, which would mean that MJ's main contribution will still be on special teams, providing Sharper stays healthy.

remember we have the predator 2.0 in patrick robinson, maybe jenkins plays a number of snaps at nickel and dime, i'm hoping he learns from sharp all year

If Jenkins is not on the field at FS this season due to Sharper's inability to be, he will be the third CB ahead of Robinson. The reps in OTA's at safety and camp allows him to learn what will eventually be his permanent position.

Most of us knew this move was coming eventually. I also agree that he will end up being a stud at free safety.

But, head a few bad games at DB. Of course that's because he was a rookie.

Well not much to say he played well at CB but his excelleration is what doomed him, he gets faster as he goes along so he would have been suspect on quick burner WRs, that said having Greer and Porter on the outsides will benefit him like it did Sharper, at FS he can just Roam & Romp all game long Patrick Robinson can hold the dime while he transitions Randal Gay can hang on to the nickle until PR is ready. I'm interested to see what will come of Roman Harpers situation, Chip Vaughn is interchangeable at S is faster and on film is a very sound tackler as a football mind if everything is equal except for speed Id go with the better coverage player

I thought he was just average at corner last year... with a nice play here and there. I do believe he will be a much better player with the ball in front of him.

Give me another season of the great special team play,along with sharpening his skills at safety while getting thrown in the fire at times,and I'm happy as all get out!true-Dat
