Drew Brees reveals fiery Super Bowl-week dressing-down to Saints teammates after players arrived to meeting late

Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees said it was a dressing-down that New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton gave his team five days before the championship game that was critical to winning the Lombardi Trophy last February.

Brees told AOL FanHouse that he and Payton both delivered fiery, closed-door messages to the team after some players arrived late for their media day appearances following a late night partying. The man who would earn MVP honors the following Sunday watched his coach lambaste the players and then held a players-only meeting and warned his teammates they risked squandering a chance for NFL imfamy:

Brees told FanHouse:

"It was very much that – 'We're not here just to be here. We're here to win this game. This is the mission we set out on a long time ago and let's get our minds right, start focusing on doing whatever we've got to do to win this game.'

"Nobody remembers who loses that game. And that was a big part of the message. Nobody ever remembers who lost. They only remember who won."

In his new book, "Home Team," Payton identified Tracy Porter, Bobby McCray, Roman Harper, Usama Young and Jermon Bushrod as latecomers to the media day event. He then told the team he didn't see the discipline necessary to win the Super Bowl:

"My intuition tells me you guys are in for a rude awakening this coming weekend. I can smell an ass kickin' on the way. I can smell a team that looks like they're just happy to be in the Super Bowl. You guys reek of that team."

Brees told FanHouse that after the meeting, the Saints "absolutely" changed their approach and studiously prepared for the game in which they defeated the Colts 31-17.
