The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints are going to start training camp at the end of the month.


Right now, the Saints are in the best position to get back into the playoff picture in club history, but it wasn’t always this way.

In the summer of 2003, I sat down with Buddy Diliberto, who had covered the team from day one, to look over his notes, read his columns from the early years and talk over what had gone on behind the scenes.

“The Big Daddy of Sports” in New Orleans had a bird’s eye view of everything up to that point, and while his relationship with then-Saints owner John Mecom was good the first two years, his confrontations with Mecom became legendary afterwards.

Diliberto passed away in January 2005, but his stories live on forever. Over the course of the next few weeks, I want to pass along some of Diliberto’s stories that he shared with me that summer and during our time at WWL 870-AM in New Orleans together.

Diliberto had a good working relationship with Saints first head coach Tom Fears and he felt strongly that the Hall of Fame wide receiver was a good choice.
