Reggie Bush goes down the memory hole at USC

USC is wasting no time ridding itself of all remnants of Reggie Bush, shipping out its copy of his 2005 Heisman Trophy ahead of schedule and stripping his No. 5 jersey from the pantheon of retired numbers. (The remaining numbers are above, from left: Mike Garrett, Marcus Allen, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Charles White and O.J. Simpson. Yes, O.J. stays.) The six remaining Heismans in Heritage Hall have been rearranged in a kind of 'V' formation, with the 2004 BCS Championship trophy at the head. Of course, that could be next.

The Heisman Trust's eight-man board of trustees is still debating whether to ask Bush to send back his trophy, thereby officially vacating the award for 2005. (Sorry, Vince Young.) But soon enough, tales will begin to emerge on recruiting trips of the angry seventh Heisman that stalks the halls, viciously stiff-arming recruits in the dead of night in search of its pedestal...

Is that really true or do you think it will affect him? I'm a little ignorant on these matters, not being from the USA, but I thought that it was important for sports stars to be recognised for what college they came from. In England, no one mentions the school when reading out the names of sports figures but I have noticed that they do in America. If that is the case then would it not have some personal affect on him? I think the whole deal sucks and like most things these days, there is a lot of ass-covering going on. For those of you that say 'Well, Reggie knew the rules, so he must pay'. Give me a break! Agents 'knew the rules' so where are they? Reggie was a kid who maybe did know the rules but when someone who is in a position of trust says it's ok to take a LOT of money, don't worry, it's fine... Very few people of that age would say no. And the money that the school got from all of this? Surely now it's considered dirty so I do hope USC are going to pay it back. And when I hear people mention that OJ Simpson did his work on the field and he wasn't at college when he was charged with murder so he shouldn't have his glory ripped away? Yes it is different, because OJ was an adult and more mature than Reggie was and therefore should have had more of a moral compass. This whole thing stinks and I get the feeling there are more than a few people rubbing their hands saying 'glad we could pin it on Reggie, we dodged a bullet there'.

...and yes, OJ's jersey remains retired.

Enough said.
