Training Camp Observations

Practice 1/8, Day 5, Training Camp Observations

Injury Report:
RB Pierre Thomas left practice early with a left wrist injury that Head Coach Sean Payton termed to be just a bruise. He’ll get an X-ray.

LB Scott Shanle (left knee) and TE Jeremy Shockey (right knee) both sat out practice with sore knees and both would be termed day-to-day.

WR Marques Colston (right knee) returned to practice full-go for the first time this training camp. Colston, whose surgery was originally said to be to his left knee, clarified that it was his right knee. The receiver said he felt 100 percent.

The PUP players – S Darren Sharper (left knee), WR Robert Meachem (toe) and LB Clint Ingram (left knee) – all sat out practice.

Heat Index (calculated from NWS numbers at MSY):
8:53 a.m.: 106 degrees
10:53 a.m.: 103 degrees

Cloud cover kept temperatures down throughout practice.

Team 1, Red Zone work:
On the first play, Thomas was injured after plowing into the left side of the line when SS Roman Harper hit the running back, sending him to the ground.

On the next play, RB Reggie Bush bounced out around right end for a nice gain. After RB Lynell Hamilton went up the middle, Bush was stopped by FS Usama Young and LB Jonathan Vilma for a two-yard gain.

With the second team, QB Patrick Ramsey got the snaps, but not much changed. The offense didn’t gain a first down during the period, including on an end around to WR Adrian Arrington, which was snuffed out by CB Leigh Torrence.

Strange observation of the morning:
P Thomas Morstead was working on field goals, going 2 of 6. Payton said the idea was just to rest K Garrett Hartley.

Red Zone 7-on-7:
(First team)
1st and 10 – Quarterback Drew Brees threw to WR Devery Henderson, but SS Roman Harper broke the pass up at the goal line.
2nd and 8 – Brees fired over the middle to TE David Thomas for a 12-yard gain
3rd and 6 – Brees found Bush open for a first down, but the running back dropped the pass.
1st and 10 –Brees hit WR Lance Moore at the 1-yard line for a first down.
3rd and goal – Brees threw into the end zone, but Harper once again knocked the ball down.

Team 2, Red Zone work:
(First-team linebackers were Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Jonathan Mitchell and Jonathan Casillas)
1st and 10 @ 30 – Brees checked down to Bush, who gained five yards.
2nd and 10 @ 30 – RB Lynell Hamilton ran at right tackle for seven yards
1st and 10 @ 15 – DE Alex Brown blew through RT Jon Stinchcomb and stopped Bush in the backfield.
2nd and goal @ 10 – On a play-action pass, Brees attempted to hit WR Devery Henderson in the end zone, but S Harper broke up the play, dropping a sure interception.
1st and 10 @ 30 – S Harper completely ruined the play, stuffing Bush in the backfield for a loss of about five.
2nd and 10 @ 30 – Hamilton ran to left end for three yards
1st and 10 @ 15 – Brees hit tight end Tyler Lorenzen for five.
2nd and goal @ 10 – Brees checked down for an eight-yard gain to Bush.

The only touchdowns came by the second team, once when RB P.J. Hill too a pitch around left end and darted in for a TD, the second coming when RB Chris Ivory went around right end and scoring when he turned on the afterburners.

What’s next?
The Saints practice two times on Wednesday, the first going from 8:50-11 a.m. on the outdoor fields. The practice is open to the public pending weather. The afternoon session runs from 4:20-5:45 p.m. and is in the indoor facility. It’s closed to the public.

Harper was under appreciated here for some time........ok, what I meant to say was he's gotten so much better and GW has elevated his game even more.

Re: Training Camp Observations

Good to hear that Roman and the defense are stopping the offense. This defense will only push the #1 offense in the league to get even better. I'd hate to be a defensive coordinator for any of the teams they plaly this season
