Moore of a chance

METAIRIE — Injuries limited what wide receiver Lance Moore could do for the New Orleans Saints last season. So far in training camp, injuries have provided Moore an opportunity to remind everyone what he can mean to this offense.

Moore played in just seven games last season because of hamstring and ankle injuries, finishing with 14 receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns. After returning in December, Moore had five receptions for 32 yards in the postseason, and a memorable two-point conversion in the Super Bowl victory against Indianapolis.

Moore has been a busy man in training camp because other wide receivers have been hurt, and he has taken advantage of the opportunity.

Top receiver Marques Colston missed the first seven practices while working back from arthroscopic knee surgery, and No. 3 receiver Robert Meachem missed the first 20 practices and the first preseason game while working back from toe surgery.

“The difference is Lance is healthy,” wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson said. “When he’s healthy, he plays fantastic. He’s healthy and he’s playing fantastic now. I think he really took care of himself this offseason and golly, boy, he’s playing well so far.”

Coach Sean Payton’s liberal use of wide receiver-heavy formations and quarterback Drew Brees’ equal-opportunity approach to distributing the ball makes Colston (team-highs of 70 catches, 1,074 yards, and nine touchdowns), Meachem (45 catches, nine touchdowns, 16.0 yards-per-catch average), former LSU star Devery Henderson (51 catches, 15.8 yards per catch, and two touchdowns), and Moore all the equivalent of starters.

But the receiver who has stood out the most during camp has been Moore, who also returns punts.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt as good as I do now,” Moore said. “Just to be able to get out here with the guys and run around and feel good is a whole different experience as opposed to a year ago. Staying healthy and obviously knowing what I’m doing, it helps to be able to go out there and just play.”

Moore entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and spent most of two seasons on New Orleans’ practice squad before playing in every game in 2007 and grabbing 32 passes for 302 yards.

“He’s a reliable, smart receiver with very good hands,” Payton said. “He’s consistent and he’s a guy who knows what to do all the time, always seems to be in the right spot. He’ll go six weeks in a season before he makes a mental error. He’s a big part of what we do. He’s instinctive, he understands how to run routes, and he has strong hands in traffic.”

Payton said the Saints considered placing Moore on injured reserve during the second half of last season, but ultimately they kept him active, hoping he could return for the stretch run.

Moore’s healing ability proved to be as reliable as his pass-catching ability, and he returned from a five-game absence for the 14th game, catching a 7-yard touchdown pass against the Cowboys before sitting out the final two regular-season games to get healthier for the postseason.

“We knew that Drew really loves Lance,” Johnson said. “They have impeccable timing. Also Lance is a guy who in the past always came back from injuries. It worked out good. We knew Lance would come back.”

My favorite of ALL of these guys. Colston, Henderson. Meachem, Arrington, Roby...I like them all. But none of these guys have Moore's seperation, adjustment ability, or his hands.

Moore's

seperation? I don't think that's exactly what he's known for.

He does run excellent routes that leads to seperation but doesn't have
the speed to cause seperation like Meachem and Henderson. The Saints
proved that they can win without him, but he makes them a better team.

Personally I love Lance. You can't coach his hands and body control.
It's a natural gift from god. What I can't stand is, we still might have to
cut Arrington since our WRs have proven to be so durable.

What a good problem to have.
