The Haslett Story

In every coaching tenure a story slowly unfolds. While the ending to the Haslett story has yet to be written, we might be reading the final chapter this year. Jim's tenure with the Saints hasn't taken the normal route that one would expect. Haslett took over a team sorely lacking talent in all areas and somehow got them to the playoffs in his first year. Following that, everyone expected the Saints to have steady improvent each year. But, that hasn't been the case. Instead it has been a roller coaster ride that hasn't had any consistancy at all.

The first year under Hasslett the defense seemed to be a strong unit, but the next year we have one of the worst defenses in the league. Last year we have one of the highest scoring offenses in the league and this year we are stuggling to score any points at all. Last year we have one of the best special teams in the league and this year special teams are a weak area. This is hardly the picture of consistancy!!

Haslett's answer to the teams problems is to ship out a high number of faces each year and bring in new ones. This could explain the lack of team chemistry each year, but I think it goes way beyond that. When you consider that the offense has remained in tact from last year, you can't use that as an excuse for the problems on offense this year.

Instead, I think there have been a combination of problems that is the reason this team does not get better each year. I think the biggest problem is with Jim Haslett and his coaching staff. Good coaches recongnize what the strengths of his players are and will play to those strengths. They will also instill discipline in a team and this team is severely lacking in that area. There really is no excuse for this. You can point to lack of talent in certain areas but that doesn't change the FACT that this coaching staff hasn't done it's job in those areas.

This season is on the brink of being lost. There is a real possibility that Haslett can turn things around this year. So far things haven't looked good this season. This game against the Falcons could determine the rest of the season for the Saints and for Jim Haslett's future with the Saints. The team seems to be coming around in some areas but Haslett has got to find way to get this team to play with some consistancy and cut out the stupid mistakes. If they can do that, this could be a team that can get to the playoffs. If they manage to lose to the Falcons, I see no hope at all......

Nah.... I just know how big a game this is for us this Sunday. If we lose it\'s basically over. If we win there\'s still a chance. If we win and do it in an impressive fashion, then look out !!!

I\'ve said it before and I\'ll say it again. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to take a step forward. Thus, I hope we don\'t do well this year. Let\'s be honest, we can\'t beat the likes of Tampa, Carolina, Washington, Giants or Dallas. So, does it REALLY matter if we beat the pitiful Falcons? Yeah, I\'d like to beat them at least once this year cause I f\'n hate the Falcons but other than that, it really doesn\'t matter. Let\'s put it this way, does it make ANY difference if we go 6-10 and 3-13? You bet. We go 3-13, we get a new coaching staff and a new quarterback. Both things that we need desperately if we are to ever get to the next level. So, in conclusion, I hope we lose enough to make these changes happen. We know the Saints don\'t know how to win, hopefully, they\'ve learned how to lose. That will be the only way we will get a Al Saunders and Eli Manning.

Dog -- It\'s attitudes like that yours that I HATE !! You have no idea what the HELL you are talking about. Did the military teach you to give up? I sure hope not !! I\'m not worried about next year. I\'m worried about this year. You need to quit playing FANTASY football and step in to the real world.

You have got to be the sorriest excuse for a fan that I\'ve ever seen.

Excellent post, BillyC. I agree on almost everything and believe I seriously overestimated Haslett and Co, as I crowed about them for several years. I also have hope for this season. Players can get hot and streaks do happen. Players also cool off and streaks end. It will be difficult with this schedule as I am worried that we may get on a streak and then hit our bye, thus derailing the streak (remember last year?)

We have a challenging deficit in the loss category already and our schedule is very tough. I understand Dog\'s feeling about wanting to do badly though I do not share them. It is certainly a long shot for us now and there is some temptation to hope we can at least parlay our season into good draft picks and an organizational shake-up. The shake-up that gave us Haslett certainly made me optimisic, especially since players always play harder for a new coaching staff and organization.

Here\'s hoping we can pull THE comeback. Vice that, I hope we can at least get some people in there for next year. What would be the worst possible outcome is that we play an average season and get the usual off-season moves (a lot of player replacement and a continuation of the lack of team chemistry and effective coaching).

No chump. What the military gave me was the skills to know how to retreat, regroup and come back with better leadership (coaching) and better equipment (players-namely qb). You are the kind of fan I hate. The one\'s that support mediocrity and are willing to blindly back poor coaching staffs with poor players JUST BECAUSE THEY WEAR A SAINTS UNIFORM! Here\'s a little history lesson for you bafoon. The Saints have won ONE playoff game in it\'s entire history because of coaching regimes and thinking just like yours. \"Oh it\'s only preseaon, we\'ll get better as the season goes on\". \"Oh, Brooks will get better, it\'s only his THIRD year as the starter\". \"Oh Haz knows what he\'s doing even though he\'s had two late season collapses in a row and is 2-4 this season with only wins against the lowly Texans and Bears to show for it\". \"Oh, let\'s win 6 games and win just enough to prohibit us from getting a truly impact player in next year\'s draft\". You sir, are the biggest idiot I\'ve had the misfortune of meeting in my entire existance. Good day to you sir. See you at the end of a 3-13 season.

I would never want to rely on a high pick in the draft to be what turns this team around. I can agree that a coaching change may be necessary at the end of the year, whether we are 3-13 or 6-10. The only thing that would sway me to push for Haslett\'s return would be a good run from this point on. I\'m not saying we need to make the playoffs for him to stay, but if he could prove that the game plan and preparation make us highly competetive in every game, that the players are motivated by him, and we finish out the season with a shot at the post season....I\'ll be impressed. I\'d give him another year and see what happens. The draft, however, is such a crapshoot that you could have a top three pick for 4 straight years and still have a bunch of bums (see the Bengals). A good front office will continue to add depth and talent to a above average team even with poor draft positions. Some teams have a way of continually adding contributors and finding some late round players that turn into the steals of the draft. To me, 3-13 or 6-10...I\'ll rather have 6-10 and rebuild as if I was 3-13.
