New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma wrapped up a consultation about his groin injury with Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia and headed back home Monday night, according to Coach Sean Payton.

Jonathan Vilma went to Philadelphia and got a second opinion on his groin injury.
No surgery was necessary, Payton said, but the Saints wanted the second opinion on Vilma's injury, which they're hoping will heal in time for the Sept. 9 opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

"We knew before he flew out this morning that the type of injury he had was not going to be a sports hernia surgery. It's really more of the lower abductor-groin area," Payton said. "The key was just having another set of eyes on it to confirm what we found, and then basically set the plan in place for the rehab.
"Certainly, he'll be out this week. But I think we're optimistic that he's gonna be able to start up practice when we get going Sunday of next week. But we're gonna have to spend a lot of time here in the next six, seven days with treatment and all the things necessary."
Also missing practice for the Saints on Monday were offensive tackle Zach Strief (knee), safety Darren Sharper (knee), safety Pierson Prioleau (knee), linebacker Clint Ingram (knee) and linebacker Stanley Arnoux (ankle).
