TV crew interviewing me about Saints fans tonight

Theyre wanting to talk about the enormous presence of Saints fans in Houston, and throughout SE Texas.

Im meeting with a guy from channel 2 tonight at 7. for more details, see the Houston Saints Fans thread.

Some things I want them to know:

1. not everyone here rooting for the Saints is an "evacuee." While no one affected by the Storm asked to be visted by tragedy, so there should be no stigma to it, the stereotype is wrong. The Saints have always been represented well here, because of the proximity with Louisiana, and the Oil biz, etc. Cajun Country actually extends well into Houston, and always has.

2. those here from New Orleans are not all "on welfare," as again a big ugly, stereotype rears its head.

3. Houston & New Orleans have always had a close relationship, both industrially, and historically, and have shared much culturally. Both cities share the same Gulf; same rich history; tough, reslilient populaces (cowboys & cajuns); a love of beans, rice & gumbo; mosquitos, bayous, alligators, indians, pirates, & adventurers. Do you realize that both Houston and New Orleans are the sites of major U.S. battles which shaped the physical shape of America? Both battles pitted ragtag locals vs. greatly superior continental armies, which should have routed them.

4. The "bandwagon" effect is very minimal here, I believe. Any kid who just wants to wear a cool jersey for his gang is wearing Raiders gear. I would guess most people you see here in Saints gear have been suffering a while.

5. Local media has really missed the boat in coverage of the Saints. The same guys who talk Cowboys, because their fans are all over, have failed to understand the Saints presence here, and are suddenly baffled by it.

6. Saints fans are a good fit for the Texas Gulf Coast. Even before the Storm, everyone here had a Louisiana neighbor, has a gumbo recipe, and most SE Texans know their way around the bayous. The Sportsmans Paradise stretches this way.

What else would you like Houston media to know about Saints fans?

And I thought you were just another pretty face.

Since 1978 the oil jobs from LA have moved to Houston. In fact, almost all of the people I went to college with are now living in Texas. That's because the job market is huge compared to LA.

Many people in LA think that Texas is the greatest state in the union. Texas is the only state that can leagally suceed from the union. If you do, I'm moving there.
