Protecting QB's?!?! How about protecting Players

Here is my problem. I am all for protecting the QB's but what about the other guys?

When there is a fumble/lose ball. There is no need for 10-22 guys jumping on the pile!!! Especially, when 3-6 guys clearly have the ball secured at in the pile.

This happened in the SB during the onside kick. Don't let players come in and add to the confusion and create more problems.

MAKE THE FREAKIN call who you saw covered the ball first. Anyone jumping on the pile or touching the player doesn't give the other team the right to pull the ball from that player... just makes the player down by contact.

ENFORCE the penalty for anyone jumping in the pile late by late hit penalties!

This crap is getting out of hand already.

Thats part of the game and always has been.I like when the players create a dog pile and fight for the ball it's football rugby style.Besides Reggie was hurt by the first or second guy that jumped on him.

But it is pointless...

After the first wave of say 3-4 guys they usually have it. Technically they are down by contact at that point. It would be better for you to circle around and see if it flies out then just jump on top.

But sometimes they really have no way to know. Setting up some sort of rule against it would have to be "interpreted" and God only knows what kinda crap would come from that. I agree with you Euph, but I don't see a graceful way to do much about it.

It wasn't dirty at all just a football accident. Sorry but if catches the ball clean it never happens.

I agree that they should make some kind of rule regarding people coming in late. Once the ref determines there is a scrum, he and his mates should circle around those players and let them, and only them, fight it out for the ball. It would make it a lot easier to determine who actually has the ball and if he was down before someone came in and pulled it away from him because a 2 or 3 other guys are pulling at his arms and hands. jmo, though

I agree with LB an Euph. I can fully understand all the guys "RIGHT THERE' jumping into a dogpile on a fumble. However, when the safety or lineman from the other side of the field comes in full speed and belly flops....to me that is an intent to do harm. I know the refs blow the whistle, therefore the play is dead. Late hit, Personal foul 15 yrds.

These so called scrums can easily get players injured when things get out of hand. Technically a rugby scrum is much more organized. Almost everyone says it incorrectly. It is actually called a loose ruck.
If they would apply the laws of rugby in approaching a loose ruck, then fewer people would come out of it injured as well as possibly having the ball stripped during the confusion.
By law a player can only enter from his side of the ball and the player must come directly "through the gate" which means directly from behind and centered to the middle of the loose ruck.

Yep! There were guys 12 yards away when Reggie secured the ball, but they kept coming and tarpedoed the stack trying to blow it up and make something happen. In a case like that, how many dead ball foul, unnecessary roughnesses could you effectively enforce? It would be a nightmare. Refs huddling and adding up violations; time spent under the review hood writing down the jersey numbers of violators...the fans would start piling on the head official as if he fumbled. But I have to say, they are making sissies out of the QB's. Some are becoming pretty good actors.
